What is Global Warming?

Average increase in the temperature of the atmosphere near the Earth's surface and in the troposphere, which can contribute to changes in global climate patterns due to effect of greenhouse gases which trap heat that would otherwise escape from Earth

Greenhouse effect
occurs planet wide when solar radiation either bounces off or is radiated forth from the earth and instead of passing through our atmosphere and outward into space

Climate change
refers to any significant change in measures of climate (such as temperature, precipitation, or wind) lasting for an extended period (decades or longer) The term climate change is often used interchangeably with the term global warming
but according to the National Academy of Sciences, "the phrase 'climate change' is growing in preferred use to 'global warming' because it helps convey that there are [other] changes in addition to rising temperatures."

Causes of global warming

Carbon Dioxide emissions Methane gas Nitrous Oxide. CFCs Water as vapor

Effects of Global Warming

Primary effects:

Rising sea levels

Beach erosion

Extreme weather

Increased rainfall

Effects of Global Warming

Secondary effects:

Decreased crop yields

Species Migration and Extinction

Global warming solutions

Kyoto protocol
stabilize atmospheric concentrations of greenhouse gases at a level that will block dangerous human interference with the climate system let ecosystems adapt naturally to climate change guarantee that food production is not threatened provide the means for economic development to advance in a sustainable way

Global warming solutions

Montreal protocol
controls the production and consumption of substances that can cause ozone depletion phasing out ozone depleting substances to surpass national and international efforts CFC alternatives - HCFCs and HFCs

Global warming solutions

National Resources Defence Council 5 step process:

Set limits on global warming pollution Invest in green jobs and clean energy Drive smarter cars Create green homes and buildings Build better communities and transportation

Global warming solutions

We will find solutions to the problem of global warming by asking countless questions about the processes we rely upon to live. We answer these questions on a personal level by changing the habits, which build each of our carbon footprints and on a global level by insisting that social and governmental structure acknowledge the need for environmental protection.
