Name of Lesson: Hop on the Word Wagon!

Grade Level: K-2 Subject: Reading/Language Arts SPED Prepared by: Jillian LaFave Overview and Purpose: The word wagon game is on the Apple app store. The purpose of the app is to teach students about letters, phonics, and spelling. Educational Standards Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS Objectives) (1) Reading/Beginning Reading Skills/Print Awareness. Students understand how English is written and printed. Students are expected to: demonstrate the one-to-one correspondence between a spoken word and a printed word in text (2) Reading/Beginning Reading Skills/Phonological Awareness. Students display phonological awareness. Students are expected to:identify syllables in spoken words;(F) blend spoken onsets and rimes to form simple words (e.g., onset/c/ and rime/at/ make cat); (G) blend spoken phonemes to form one-syllable words (e.g.,/m/ /a/ /n/ says man); (H) isolate the initial sound in one-syllable spoken words; and (I) segment spoken one-syllable words into two to three phonemes (e.g., dog:/d/ /o/ /g/). Using the Word Wagon application from Apples app store the student will be able identify individual letters. Using the Word Wagon application from Apples app store the student will be able identify individual sounds and match the sounds with the corresponding letters. Using the Word Wagon application from Apples app store the student will be able identify groups of letters to create words. Using the Word Wagon application from Apples app store the student will be able spell groups of words using corresponding letters.

Materials Needed: Ipad or tablet Teacher made test to identify letters, sounds, and spelling of one syllable words. Other Resources: (websites, videos, books, etc.) Apple store application store Word Wagon Application Internet Access Information: Give and/or demonstration necessary information 1. The teacher and/or paraprofessional will review previously learned letters with individual students. 2. The teacher and/or paraprofessional will review previously learned sounds and match the sound with the corresponding letters with the student. 3. The student will use the Word Wagon application on the Ipad and/or tablet to practice reviewing letters, and sounds through various games. 4. The student will use the Word Wagon application on the Ipad and/or tablet to practice

spelling one syllable words.

Verification: Steps to check for student understanding

1. The teacher/paraprofessional will monitor the student while the student is playing the
game on the Word Wagon application.

2. The teacher and/or paraprofessional should administer a unit test to the student upon
the completion of the reading/spelling unit.

3. Student progress should be reported and compared upon the completion of each unit
test. Activity: Describe activity that will reinforce the lesson The student will log on to the application and begin by reviewing their letters using the games that the Word Wagon application provides. Once the student has mastered identifying their letters the application will move on to identifying sounds. The student will then begin practicing matching the sounds with the corresponding letters. Upon mastering the letters and sounds together the student will begin practicing reading and spelling one syllable words.

Notes This lesson plan was designed to be used over a week long period (if student needs additional practice with words then the lesson plan can be expanded). This lesson coincides with spelling words from the Fountas Pinnell word list. I suggest using a tablet/Ipad for this spelling game so that students will have an easier time manipulating the game and seeing the screen. *Note: This lesson plan was designed to be used in a special education classroom, but can be used in a general education classroom.*
