Titanic Museum Exhibit

Grade Level: 7 Subject: Social Studies Prepared by: Tyler Zunker Overview and Purpose: The purpose of this lesson is for students to use an IPad to complete a walk-through of a Titanic museum exhibit in the classroom. Educational Standards

NCSS standards 7.4.4.20.2: Development of an Industrial United States 7.4.1.2.1: Historical inquiry is a process in which multiple sources and different kinds of historical evidence are analyzed to draw conclusions about how and why things happened in the past.
NETS.S standards 2.a: Interact, collaborate, and publish with peers, experts, or others employing a variety of digital environments and media 3.a: Plan strategies to guide inquiries 3.b: Locate, organize, analyze, evaluate, synthesize, and ethically use information from a variety of sources and media Objectives: Students will be able to: Describe the reasons the Titanic sunk Create a podcast for the final exhibit piece using Audio Memos Lite Upload their completed podcast to the LMS (Schoology) Critique the other projects in the class using the comments feature of Schoology Materials Needed: An IPad for each student or an IPad for each exhibit station Podcasts download to each device Pictures and replicas from the Titanic Printed Listening Log worksheets Information: This activity is designed for (2-3) 45 minute class periods. The teacher will create the podcast (mP3 files) ahead of time for each exhibit piece and place exhibit pieces around the room. If an IPad is not available for each student, place an IPad at each listening station for students to use. If IPads are not available at all, other listening devices or computers can also be used.

Verification:

1. Students will show their understanding of the sinking of the Titanic by creating a
Audio Memos Lite (app) recording of their own exhibit presentation for the final artifact of the exhibit (1-2 minutes). 2. Students will show their understanding of the content from the exhibit by completing the listening log while walking through the classroom museum exhibit 3. Students will show their understanding of the content by completing the Titanic portion of the summative assessment piece (exam). Activity: The classroom has been turned into a museum exhibit about the Titanic. Pictures and replica artifacts are scattered throughout the room with a corresponding index card with a number for each exhibit piece. The teacher will begin by explaining how to proceed around the room. Students will walk to each exhibit piece, listen to the teacher-prepared podcast, and answer the corresponding questions on the listening log worksheet. The class will do the first podcast/artifact together (Edward Smith - captain of the Titanic). Because students have their own IPad, they can work at their own pace and pause/play as needed. After completing all exhibits and questions on the listening log, students will then create an exhibit podcast with a partner using the Audio Memos Lite app on their IPad. The podcast will be 1-2 minutes and correspond with the final exhibit picture (Names of Deceased). Students will create their podcasts in the podcast center located in the conference room in the house area so they can do it in relative silence. After completion of the podcast students will upload their podcast to the LMS (Schoology) and type a final copy of their podcast transcript. Finally, students will critique the other students podcasts using the sandwhich method (positive statement, improvement statement, positive statement). They will do this using the comment feature of Schoology. Notes Each IPad will need Audio Memos Lite and the prerecorded podcasts of each exhibit and artifact. If an IPad cannot be used by each student, have students go through the exhibit in a shotgun start so they can move through the exhibit faster using a laptop or other device setup.
