Exercise 05

TMR 4215 Sea Loads

Given: 19.09.08 Due: 03.10.08 Guidance: 26.09.08 and 03.10.08 in T1

Problem 3.6 and 3.8 from Faltinsen (1990)

Problem: Fluid motion in a moonpool

Solve exercise 3.6 pp 99-100 in Faltinsens book.

1.1 Hints
1.1.1 a) Use only the linear terms of Eq. (2.4) pp. 14! (Linearised Bernoulli) Use Eq. (2.12) p. 15 with = to introduce into the differentiated Bernoulli. Do not forget that the order of linear differential operators can be interchanged i.e. : f f = t z z t

1.1.2 b) Use that

Zb
a

f dz = f (b) f (a) . z

Use the linearized Bernoullis equation after the integration at z = h. 1.1.3 c) Write the homogeneous form of Eq. (3.86) (this is an Ordinary Differential Equation) where the solution of the homogeneous ODE is used to nd n . 1.1.4 d) Integrate between point 1 and 2 with respect to ds and not with z as before!

Problem: Frequency of encounter spectrum

Solve exercise 3.8 pp 100-101 in Faltinsens book.

2.1 Hints
2.1.1 a) The time averaged wave energy is 1 E = gA2 . j 2 See Eq. (2.23) on pp. 23. What does this mean? What is the relation between energy and the wave spectrum? How can we use this? 2.1.2 b) Take the derivative of Eq. (3.29) pp. 55 with respect to d0 and use the equation which is given in a). Find the transfer function 3a . The wave a e spectrum S(0 ) and the heave motion spectrum in forward speed, S3 (e ) are known. Find the transfer function 3a . a

The wave spectrum S(0 ) and the response (heave motion) spectrum in e forward speed, SR () are known.

2.1.3 c) In following sea one has to take care since e is not a one-to-one function of 0 .

e Range 1 Range 2 Range 3

g/(4U) e 1 g/(2U) 2 g/U 3 0

Figure 2: Relation between 0 and e . Use the same process as by b) but you have to nd the derivate now with respect to de . Keep in your mind that we now have three frequencies, i.e.: Se (e )|de | = S(1 )|d0 |=1 + S(2 )|d0 |=2 + S(3 )|d0 |=3 Remember the denition of the absolute value |a| = a. Dene 0 as a function of e from: U e = 0 2 0 g Do not forget that we are only interested in positive frequencies!
