Is it possible to perform Time History analysis as per Indian code? If,Yes, then where do I get the

data for time versus acceleration for the different centres in India. I undestand USA has all such data for their country and therefore US code is able to supply the data only by inputting the latitude and longitude of the place in the staad definition of Time History. In our country, I belive there is no such data available. 2.The El Centro data of 1940 given in some books and available on web site: Al Centro is a place in California, highly prone to EQ. How this data would be helpful to us or for that matter to the entire of USA. I tried to find out answer to the above inquisities but could not. Or is that as Al centro data is the worst known EQ data so USA is interested in utilising the same data for all important structures.

Dear Sharma Yes! we can do. But we have to consult agencies like NGRI for time versus acceleration data of a particular site. Same data can be input in STAAD for time history analysis.

Strictly speaking, Time history data is the recording of a real event, so is not conforming to any code. Every Time history data can be subjected to a process to obtain a Response Spectrum curve specific to that time history data. like a repeated Newmark-beta method. This time history data specific Spectrum curve is irregular and has no resemblance to the smooth idealized Spectrum curve in our code However, the time history data can be tweaked such that that tweaked time history data specific Spectrum curve will come close to resemble the smooth idealized Spectrum curve (a kind of jagged ideslised curve). This tweaked data is termed Design Earthquake Time Histories or Generated Time History (or artificial earthquake as I call it). There are such tweaking programs available -- (by the

word tweak, I didnt mean anything like being sleazy or crooked Recent trends discourage such code conforming time histories generated, and recommend what is called an ensemble of selected time histories that together conform to the idealized codal response spectrum curve, for reasons Im not going into now. However, the artificial earthquake method is still being followed in many of our universities (I dont know about research institutions like SERC or CBRI), and will go on for some more time. In your case, as my fellow SEFIan has pointed to, site specific time history records would be more useful -- from a consultants point of view. But only if you can get those. Rahul Leslie
