COURSE DESCRIPTIONS
IB4001: International Business Environment
Pre-requisite: BBA-3114

This course is designed to focus on the broadly based introduction to the field of international business. Consists of an inter-disciplinary survey of the fundamentals of (1) international trade; (2) environmental factors; (3) international institutions and agencies; and (4) company organization, managerial functions and operations around the world. The nature and role of culture in international business and management, regional cultural norms throughout the world, international negotiating and resolution styles, cross-cultural synergy, international business ethics, international H.R. management issues, and international organizations that influence business.

IB-4002: Global Finance


Pre-requisite: BBA-3116

This course is designed to focus on international and regional financial arrangement and institutions. It will start with the discussion of comparative economic advantage and genesis of international trade, and will cover balance of payments, adjustments and its impact on world trade, role of commercial and central banks in financing

international capital flow, financing import and exports, instruments and markets of foreign exchange, and determination of exchange rates.

IB-4003: Global Marketing


Pre-requisite: BBA-3117

This course provides an overview of the global strategy and process of marketing goods and services. National market, review of international trade theory, analysis of balance of payment position and foreign currency market, export market, international joint ventures, licensing and licensing arrangements, patents and copyrights, international trade arrangements and regional trade grouping, generalized system of preferences, packaging, shipping and financing practices in the international market are discussed in this course.

IB-4004: International Banking


Pre-requisite: BBA-3116

The terms international banking and multinational banking are often used interchangeably. Theoretically, international banking is broader than multinational banking as the former deals with cross-border and crosscurrency facets of banking business while the later involves an element of foreign direct investment and MNBs are a type of multinational enterprise (MNE). Physical banking presence offshore is not necessary for the operation of international banking and foreign banking.

IB-4005: Human Resource in Global Business Environment


Pre-requisite: BBA-3114

This course studies issues and problems related to managing HR in global business environment. Topics include international HR comparisons, international HR improvement and competitive leverage, issues critical to global operations, international cross-functional coordination, coordinating international HR flow, coordinating international process and policies design, among others.

IB-4006: International Management


Pre-requisite: BBA-3117

This seminar style course will emphasize the challenging role of the individual manager responsible for advancing his/her firms international strategy and controlling its operations effectively. Class preparation, self-awareness surveys, experiential exercises and in-class simulations will be used to illustrate key global leadership concepts. Class discussion will focus on those areas where comprehension is substantially enhanced by additional elaboration or illustration. The instructional approach will emphasize cooperative learning and will tend towards an environment in which students will feel comfortable sharing their interaction with, and learning of, the course materials.

IB-4007: Global Business Strategy


Pre-requisite: BBA-3117

This course focuses on future developments, changing environments, and creativity in global business. Students will develop new, original, global strategies establishing unique competitive advantages for selected firms and organizations. Environmental, industry, and core competency analyses will be presented and adapted to particular global regions and countries. This course examines grand strategies with a particular focus on international mergers, acquisitions, and other business combinations.

IB-4008: International Enterprises and Transactions


Pre-requisite: IB 4001

This course examines international organizational structures and functions. This course examines components of strategic planning, formal control and business/government relationships, strategic alliances, and related problems such as international agreements and cross-cultural and transactional questions.

IB-4009: Negotiation Theory and Practice


Pre-requisite: IB 4001

Through both lecture and simulation, this course explores major themes in negotiation theory and practice, including distributive versus integrative bargaining, personality styles, multi-party negotiation, and ethical issues. Students are encouraged to reflect on the theoretical foundations that underlie our actions and on the many considerations that influence effective and ethical negotiation practice.

IB-4010: Applied Portfolio Management


Pre-requisite: IB 4002

This unit provides students with the analytical skills and techniques required to effectively manage diversified portfolios of securities. The first section of the unit prepares students for asset allocation management and performance assessment of diversified portfolios. Section two reviews theoretical and practical issues relating to the management of portfolios containing options, futures and other derivatives. Material presented has relevance for students interested in careers as security analysts, portfolio managers and corporate treasurers.

IB-4011: Security Pricing and Hedging


Pre-requisite: IB 4002

This unit explores the principles, theory and techniques of asset pricing. The first half of the unit focuses on portfolio analysis and multifactor models applicable to problems in investment analysis and asset allocation. The second half of the unit focuses on pricing techniques driven by arbitrage arguments. Arbitrage or relative pricing arguments underpin powerful, robust methods for pricing derivative securities.

IB-4012: Corporate Accounting and Reporting


Pre-requisite: IB 4001

This unit examines the framework and techniques that are used to prepare general-purpose financial reports for companies. The main topic of the unit is the techniques of consolidation accounting used to prepare the consolidated financial statements for a corporate group. The unit also considers the recognition and measurement of the financial statement elements, the translation of foreign operations and accounting for income tax. The unit provides an evaluation of various theoretical and practical issues and students are challenged to question and critically evaluate the foundations and current issues associated with of financial accounting. Topics include the accounting standard setting environment; alternative measurement systems in accounting; the impact of accounting numbers on capital markets and contracts; critical dimensions in accounting; international accounting issues; professional ethics in accounting; leasing, employee benefits, director, executive and related party disclosures, intangibles, and agriculture and heritage assets.

IB-4013: Global Business Ethics


Pre-requisite: IB 4001

This course is going to introduce the students to the differences in culture, laws and politics among countries will be analyzed. Culture in the work place and different negotiating styles will be discussed. This course will explore selected theories of ethics and fundamental principles of ethical management, with a focus on practical approaches to dealing with ethical dilemmas across the public, private, and nonprofit sectors. The class will break into teams for a simulated negotiating session between groups representing different cultures. Some case studies will be analyzed. Various ethical issues will be discussed in smaller groups.

IB-4014: Global Information Technology Management


Pre-requisite: IB 4001

This course introduces students to global information systems. The course is designed for students who desire to understand the way managers, teams, and organizations develop, use and manage global information systems. The course covers a range of global IS/IT applications and how they are deployed in global organization. After completing this course students should have a better understanding of issues involved in building a success global software team. Students will be able to conduct a national IT assessment for any nation and analyze the implications for global organizations.

IB-4015: International Logistics and Supply Chain Management


Pre-requisite: IB 4003

This introductory course is designed to provide students with an overview of the key areas in international logistics and supply chain management. The course also provides a solid understanding of the basic terms, concepts and relationships involved in managing logistics and supply chains. On completion of this course, students should understand the major components of international supply chains and how these are linked. Students will also be introduced to the basic terms, concepts and relationships of international logistics and supply chains as a basis for more advanced studies.

IB-4016: Development Economics


Pre-requisite: IB 4002

This course will offer a brief overview of selected topics in development economics at the introductory level. Following a general introduction to the subject and to the data the course will focus on long-term processes of productivity growth and structural transformation. This will be followed by a critical presentation of the still rapidly growing, literature on cross country growth comparisons. The course will discuss the issues of economic development of Bangladesh, India and South Asia since their independence from colonial rule in the late 1940s. Particular attention will be given to their economic liberalization and systemic reforms since the 1990s and their future economic prospects in the global economy.

IB-4017: Strategic International Marketing


Pre-requisite: IB 4003

The course commences by providing an overview of the forces now transforming the international economy into a global economy. The course focuses on two distinct business entities: the entrepreneurial SME termed the 'born global' firm and the large and MNC the 'growing global' firm and examines commonalities and differences in how these two distinct types undertake marketing strategy and functions. Course elements include: the criteria that should be used to decide on and evaluate markets; the mode of international market entry; the elements of the

international marketing plan; and the interrelationship of strategy, sourcing and operations in international marketing.

IB-4018: International Business Governance


Pre-requisite: IB 4001

The 21st century is an era of rapid changes in all spheres - economic, social, political, cultural, technological and environmental. For developing nations this transforming environment is opening up new opportunities and posing fresh challenges. The effectiveness of state in ensuring good governance is an essential prerequisite for sustainable development. Political governance. Through literature reviews and legal analysis, the course will review the formal constraints of architecture of the state (the Constitution of Bangladesh) and the system of checks and balances that enabled the executive to neutralize/exercise influence over institutions and other branches of the government designed to make it accountable. NGO governance Perhaps because the formal institutions of the state in Bangladesh do not fulfill social expectations and are short on capacity and resources especially in the areas of education, service delivery, economic empowerment, and access to justice non-governmental organizations complement (sometimes overtake) the activities and functions of the government. The far reach and diversity of activities by NGOs do not mean that the civil society of Bangladesh is vibrant or politically active in a role of a watchdog of the state. Large segments of civil society have been captured by partisan interests, and with few exceptions, the internal governance of NGOs is a matter closed to scrutiny of the public.

IB-4019: Contemporary Issues in International Business


Pre-requisite: IB 4001

This course will create opportunities for students from across the globe to share information and perspectives on contemporary issues important to international business. In weekly, facilitated, small-group conversations, students improve their ability to formulate and express ideas and opinions, and practice persuasion and facilitation skills. Investigation of issues in international business practice interpreted from the foundations of the social sciences. Topics will be chosen from contemporary issues in global business and economics.

IB-4020: International Business Law


Pre-requisite: IB 4001

The study of the social, political, and legal environments in which organizations must operate. Special emphasis on legal institutions, their impact upon the operation and performance of business and government, and ethical standards and their effect upon business and government. This course surveys trends and practices that are part of the process of mediation across national boundaries. Students study the interrelationships among countries as these affect individuals and business organizations attempting to operate internationally. Course content focuses on transnational business activities.
