SHARP IMAGING & VERY WIDE LISTENING WINDOW WITH THE M&K HIGH-FREQUENCY PRISM SYSTEM The curved metal grille of the speaker is actually part of M&Ks innovative High-Frequency Prism system. On the LCR-851, this system combines a stylish, high-tech heavy curved mesh metal grille with a tweeter mounted at a 4.7 angle and an M&K Phase-FocusedTM crossover to form the High-Frequency Prism. This system vastly improves the speakers off-axis response (as well as the on-axis response) by shaping a very smooth and extended flat high-frequency response over a very wide listening window. The window is directed for optimum imaging, requiring separate left and right speakers. Counterintuitively, this requires that the tweeter point 4.7 away from the listening position (up, if the speaker is above the screen, and down if the speaker is below the screen). Why is all of this so important? When listeners are located off of a speakers direct axis, the sound they hear is prone to irregular response and lobing. Lobes are large off-axis dips and peaks in frequency response that cause significant performance problems, resulting in poor sound quality for listeners sitting off-axis. M&K PHASE-FOCUSEDTM CROSSOVER - Many horizontal center channel speakers have a very narrow sweet spot, which results in poor dialog articulation, especially for listeners not directly in front of the speaker. Horizontal center speakers with a woofer - tweeter - woofer design have irregular response and lobing (large off-axis dips and peaks in frequency response) in the horizontal plane. But M&K's Phase-FocusedTM crossover design and technically correct tweeter - woofer - woofer driver configuration optimize performance not just for on-axis response but for a very smooth response over a wider listening window than most other center channel speakers. While other crossover designers consider just frequency response on one axis, we consider the speaker's response in both the time and frequency domain at various angles in both the vertical and horizontal planes. This uniquely sophisticated crossover is critically tuned through both psychoacoustic listening analysis and complex computer analysis. The Phase-FocusedTM crossover and driver configuration work in conjunction with the High-Frequency Prism system to deliver a very smooth response over a wide horizontal and vertical listening window unlike nearly all multiple-driver horizontal center channel speakers.
