Microsoft SQL Server 2000

The strategic database choice for mySAP.com business applications Technical Fact Sheet
SQL Server 2000 highlights: Performance provides scalability of up to 26.000 SAP SD benchmark users Data Warehousing integration of SQL Server Analysis Services with SAP Business Information Warehouse release 3.0a Future compliance compatible with the performance-enhancing SAN-VI protocol Manageability - improved intelligent auto-tuning. Database checks up to three times faster Availability - Graphical User Interface for Standby Database Administration and improved cluster support for even more uninterrupted application uptime Scalability - overcome previous memory (RAM) restrictions on 32-bit platforms, 64-bit enabled Reliability - innovative back Introducing Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Microsoft SQL Server 2000 (code-named Shiloh) marks a significant evolution of Microsoft's flagship Relational Database Management System (RDBMS). Building on the solid foundation established by SQL Server 7.0, SQL Server 2000 is the most robust database for the Windows family. It is the RDBMS of choice for SAP solutions on Windows 2000. Customer requirements and business needs have driven a host of product innovations, raising the bar standard in performance, manageability, availability, scalability and security. SQL Server 2000 provides the tools and technologies required to extract maximum value and efficiencies from advanced business solutions like mySAP.com. The enterprise capabilities provided by SQL Server 2000, in conjunction with the Windows 2000 operating environment, are rapidly eroding market territory once dominated by mainframe/midrange systems. More performance Extended inter-query parallelism significantly improves performanceSQL Server 2000 significantly improves performance by intelligently selects selecting resources resources (if necessary distributing the computing load across several CPUs) before launching a query (if necessary distributing the computing load across several CPUs). . This ensures that queries do not adversely affect overall system performance. This improved feature feature extended inter-query parallelism - is now also available for insert/delete and update commands, and has contributed towards a 27% increase in query performance compared to SQL Server 7.0 in tests executed using a SAP query test tool. Recent SAP SD benchmark tests indicated that scalability does not end with 8-way servers. Based on the Unisys ES7000 with 16, 24 and 32 Intel Pentium III Xeon processors the combination of Windows 2000 Datacenter Server and SQL Server scaled between 10.400 and up to 26.000 SAP SD benchmark users respectively.

With the release of SAP Business Information Warehouse release 3.0a (expected by Q4/01) SAP will also leverage the MOLAP feature of SQL Server 2000 Analysis Services. The Analysis Services offered with Microsoft SQL Server 2000 significantly enhance the capabilities of the online analytical processing (OLAP) Services component introduced in SQL Server version 7.0. The integration will make it possible to run even high end implementations of SAPs comprehensive Data Warehouse solution on industry standard servers. Future compliance SQL Server 2000 features new network drivers supporting the performance-enhancing SAN-VI protocol. This protocol enables network components to be accessed directly, saving valuable resources and time. SQL Server 2000 is thus fully compatible withnetwork hardware from Compaq ServerNet II and cLAN productsGigaNet cLAN network hardware. from GigaNet. Benchmarks again indicate a significant increase in performance. Enhanced manageability SQL Server 2000 dramatically simplifies and optimises management tasks. Intelligent auto-tuning detects the capabilities and limitations of the local infrastructure and undertakes tasks in a system-friendly way, reducing management headaches. Parallelism has been extended to tasks such as the Database Consistency Check (DBCC) and the creation of indices. This ensures faster, more efficient processing by distributing the load across several processors. Tests run with the checkdb option of DBCC revealed a three-fold increase in throughput. Higher availability Particularly in a mySAP.com environment, SQL Server 2000 increases the availability of applications availability. If the need arises, database tables can now be reorganised online. Individual tables are simply moved in the background and locked only for the duration of the move. By eliminating the need to unload tables and shut the system down, SQL Server 2000 makes a valuable contribution to uninterrupted uptime. With the full integration of log

Server consolidation In response to the needs of ASPs and other large-scale mySAP.com deployments, several versions of SQL Server hosting a variety of separate databases can now be installed on the same server. Resource balancing provided by Windows 2000 Datacenter Server ensures multiple instances do not adversely affect on database performance. This feature will be supported with more recent releases of SAP software.

shipping in the SQL Server Enterprise Manager, database administrators can easily configure and maintain standby databases on different servers, providing an important step towards disaster tolerance. Recognising the needs of cluster systems, SQL Server 2000 also allows minimal interruption during version updates by providing a rolling cluster upgrade capability. Greater scalability In conjunction with Windows 2000 as the operating system, SQL Server 2000 has overcome previous memory restrictions. The RAM now scales from 3 GB to 8 GB and even up to 64 GB in conjunction with the Windows 2000 Datacenter Server. A 64-bit version is also planned to coincide with the release of 64-bit hardware. Improved reliability As the move from GigabyteB to Terabyte continuesB, the need for fast, reliable backup and restore is critical. SQL Server 2000 addresses the fast-growing volumes of data generated by SAP with two backup and restore innovations:

.
Differential backup accelerates backup by only copying the data that has been changed since the last full backup.; Snapshot backup exploits the mirror-splitting functionality offered by EMC Timefinder or Compaq StorageWorks solutions.

Utilising mMirror-splitting partition technology it is also an option in order to develop a hot standby server. Using hot standby servers, also referred to as log shipping, is an effective way to reduce the lengthy process involved with disaster restore and recovery. It is also possible to set up and administer via the Enterprise Manager, providing one single point of control for an entire SAP database.
