Politics on parade for Middletowns 4th of July celebration

Politics were in the air during
Middletowns 4th of July parade.
Both Democrats and Republicans
had enthusiastic supporters march-
ing, even though the temperature
never dropped below 99 degrees.
All of the Republican candidates,
presidential contender Mitt Rom-
ney, senatorial candidate George
Allen and Rep. Frank Wolf had con-
ficting engagements and could not
attend. Wolf has walked in Middle-
towns parade in the past.
Te group of nine Republican
supporters sported Wolf Pack
t-shirts. One supporter carried
a Dont Tread on Me fag and
pulled a wagon which was followed
by a golf cart. Big campaign signs
were carried and a pickup truck
was fully decorated with campaign
signs. Former Middletown Mayor
Mark Brown was overheard coun-
seling the Republicans to throw lots
of candy.
Frederick County GOP leader
Mike Lindsay was asked what his
candidates would do to help the
small communities throughout the
Shenandoah Valley. Jobs, Jobs,
Jobs was his response. Lindsay said
that putting people to work would
help the economy. No details were
provided on how the jobs would be
created.
Lindsay said he was thrilled with
the great turnout for an awesome
parade. He was glad to be bring-
ing people together. Te Frederick
County Republicans plan on doing
most of their campaigning the old-
fashioned way: by going door to
door. Local Republicans are looking
forward to the Rally in the Valley
in September and other campaign
events. Tey will be opening a
headquarters in Winchester soon.
Democrats were also out in force.
Over forty two peopleand several
of their four-legged supportersat-
tended the parade. Although Presi-
dent Obama was a no-show, both
congressional candidate Kristin
Cabral and senate candidate Tim
Kaine and his wife Ann Holton
marched in the event. Kaine has
marched in many of Middletowns
parades.
Cabral said she would help the
communities in the Shenandoah
Valley by focusing on job creation,
public safety, a strong national
defense and by providing good
schools, good roads and a clean
environment. She was happy with
her launch in Leesburg and said she
is pleased with the response she is
getting from the public.
Kaine had the most detailed re-
sponses as to how to help the com-
munities in the Shenandoah Valley.
To be fair, he has a long track re-
cord, having served as a missionary
in Latin America, as mayor of Rich-
mond, as Lieutenant Governor and
Governor of Virginia followed by a
stint as Chairman of the Democrat-
ic National Committee. Kaine said
that as governor he used economic
development tools to bring busi-
nesses to rural Virginia. He named
a number of companies that relo-
cated to Harrisonburg and Danville.
He said he also focused on tax cred-
its, conservation easements and us-
ing agricultural crops for energy
as tools to help the region. Kaine
also stressed that he knows how to
deal with fscal issues and that he
would do what is right when deal-
ing with the federal budget. Kaine
said he is adamant that the parties
need to work together for the good
of the nation and insisted he will
work with the next president, no
matter which party is in power.
According to Winchester City
Council member Evan Clark, both
candidates are doing a lot of local
events. He said people are both
pleased and responding to the
messages of both candidates.
After the parade, the Young Dem-
ocrats hosted a party to plan future
events.

Earth, wind, fre - and sky? A tumultuous weather week
Did a UFO unidentifed falling object start GW Forest fre?

County residents who witnessed a
bright object fall from the June 24th
night sky in the area where a fre in
the George Washington National
Forest broke out the following day
wonder if the two events are related.
And they are asking still unan-
swered questions about what it was
they saw fall shortly before midnight
the evening of Sunday, June 24.
And whatever it was that Michael
Hayes and friends saw descend into
the area where a fre was reported
the following day around 1:30 p.m.
and from which they saw an orange
glow emanate from upon impact
around 11:50 p.m. the previous
night, it was the beginning of a wild
weather week.
After a week, despite the eforts of
what had grown to a force of 219 re-
sponders from multiple agencies and
several states, as of July 5, the oc-
casionally wind-driven GW-Jefer-
son Forests fre had grown to 1,192
acres.
Te fre, known as the point-2
fre grew progressively throughout
its frst week, cited around 50 acres
its second day of existence, over 100
acres Wednesday, June 27; 623 acres
by Friday, June 29; 824 acres June 30;
990 acres July 3; and 1,162 acres July
4. Forest ofcials told us on June 30,
that the Derecho storms despite the
devastation described in a press re-
lease from the governors ofce on
July 2, had laid the fre down a little
it didnt put it out.
GW Forest Information Ofcer
Ted Cofman said at least four de-
partments, including the National
Forest Service, the Virginia Depart-
ment of Forestry, the National Oce-
anic and Atmospheric Administra-
tion, as well as Warren County Fire
& Rescue led the initial response. In
addition to aerial dumping of water
on the fre, containment lines were
being bulldozed to try and create an
area without forest growth to fuel the
fre and stop its progress. Tree heli-
copters and three bulldozers were
involved in fghting the fre.
Te Derecho event
While the thunderstorms storms
of Friday night at our house it
sounded like a tornado approach-
ing the middle of Front Royal only
dampened that fres progress, they
left over 27,000 Shenandoah Valley
Electrical Cooperative customers
without power on Friday and Sat-
urday, June 29-30, as temperatures
skyrocketed to around 100 degrees
Fahrenheit.
Over 2000 U.S. high temperature
records were set in the seven-day
period between June 27 and July
3, Democracy Now reported while
questioning how increasing patterns
of weather extremes in not only the
U.S., but worldwide are reported by
the mainstream, corporate-owned
media none dare suggest it might
involve climate change and global
warming. One climatologist inter-
viewed said extreme weather pat-
terns like the current heat wave,
previously experienced at 20-year
intervals, were likely to begin occur-
ring at two-year intervals in the near
or immediate future
In the mid-Atlantic region as
many as 5 million were reported to
have been out of power, with half
that number still without power the

nells ofce as of historic and fatal
dimensions. Press releases from the
governors ofce through July 5, cited
19 deaths, 13 directly from the storm
and six from heat problems after an
estimated 1.2 million Virginians lost
power due to the storms.
Shelters, including at Warren
Countys Bentonville and North
Warren Fire Stations, were opened
throughout impacted counties for
those who could sufer physically
from the extreme heat and no refuge
from air conditioning.
Tings that fall from the sky
But back to that thing that fell
from the sky on Sunday night, June
24 Michael Hayes said he saw what
he initially thought was a refection
of a red refector on a tractor on his
fathers property around 11:50 p.m.
Sunday night, June 24 until he real-
ized the tractor was not on that sec-
tion of the property.
At frst it looked like a small cres-
cent, like a crescent moon. Ten as
it was falling it became elongated
until it came down on Massanut-
ten Mountain, Hayes told us. He
described what he initially saw fall-
ing from the sky as about fnger nail
size. When it came down there was
an orange glow right from the area
the fre was frst reported in the next
day.
Hayes was looking toward the
George Washington National For-
est from the area of Rocky Lane and
Panhandle Road.
With their curiosity up, around 5
p.m. Monday, Michael, cousin Codey
Hayes and friend Satchel McClellan
drove to the top of Fort Valley to get
another view of the windswept fre
they had watched spread from the
previous evenings ground zero on
Massanutten throughout Monday
afternoon, June 25.
While near the top of Fort Valley
Road they encountered a moderate-
sized fatbed truck with something
about the size of a go-kart covered by
a tarp going the other way. Te fat-
bed, about dump truck length and
width Codey estimated, was fanked
front and back by fre trucks, though
they were not sure what departments
those trucks were from (weve gotten
no response from any local depart-
ment on any deployment to the area
on such a call).
What really attracted their atten-
tion was a message picked up on a
scanner application on a cell phone
inquiring about an estimated ETA
at Mt. Weather (the FEMA facil-
ity in Clarke County of Route 7),
with a reply estimating an hour and
half. While they were not sure of the
source of the call or its recipient, the
coincidence of timing was enough to
send their, and our, imaginations fy-
ing a fallen piece of a spy satellite,
a lost training mission unmanned
drone who knows
And disappear into the mist
Around 3 p.m. on Wednesday,
June 27, we contacted GW National
Forest Public Information Ofcer
Stephanie Bushong. She told us she
had no information on any object
falling from the sky or such an event
having any connection to the fre frst
reported at 1:30 p.m. on June 25.
We told Bushong we had eyewit-
ness reports of both a light descend-
ing the previous night in the area the
fre was frst reported in the follow-
ing day, as well as of a go-kart-sized
object covered by a tarp being trans-
ported from the area accompanied by
fre trucks late Monday afternoon.
Bushong reacted by hurriedly get-
ting our contact information and tell-
ing us she would get back to us. After
two days without a reply, we called
back on Friday, June 29. Tis time we
talked to another GW Forest Service
Public Information ofcer, Ted Cof-
man.
After updating the fre status info,
we re-broached our things that fall
from the sky theory of the fres ori-
gin.
Like Bushong two days earlier,
Cofman said he had no such infor-
mation.
When we revisited our eyewitness
reports, Cofman attempted to bring
us back to earth.
If something fell out of the sky
in there, its probably still there. Its
pretty remote, Cofman pointed
out.
Undeterred and always suspicious
of ofcial silences on potentially
spacey events and theories, we
asked if he could check with Bush-
ong on her promised inquiry into
what Michael Hayes and friends saw
on June 24 and 25.
He said he would tick, tick, tick
- six days and counting
PS - the cause of the fre is ofcially
listed as lightning sure, why not
swamp gas too and it must have
been heat lightning the evening of
June 24.

A 15-page complaint in a $5.35-
million lawsuit alleges six causes of
action against Human Life Inter-
national, the international pro-life
advocacy group Father Tomas Eu-
teneuer headed for a decade as presi-
dent, and the Arlington Catholic Di-
ocese. Included in the complaint are
graphic accounts of truly perverse
behavior that went on to a great ex-
tent, plaintif Jane Doe contends, un-
der the roof of what is billed as the
worlds largest pro-life organization,
headquartered in Front Royal, Vir-
ginia.
While neither Euteneuer nor his
home diocese is named, HLI, its en-
dowment and the Arlington Diocese
where plaintif Jane Doe took her sto-
ry of over two years of abuse on July
7, 2010, is, along with the dioceses
presiding Bishop Paul S. Loverde and
the Arlington Diocese corporate en-
tity.
Euteneuer headed HLI for a decade
(2000-2010) and become the highly
public face of the anti-abortion, pro-
life lobby in the United States and
around the world. During that ten-
ure he was under the auspices of the
Palm Beach, Florida Diocese.
We contacted Palm Beach Diocese
Communications Director Dianne
Laubert to ask if the diocese had
reached an out-of-court settlement
for itself, Father Euteneuer, or both,
that might explain their absence as
defendants in the Jane Doe lawsuit.
Laubert declined comment for the
diocese, suggesting we contact the
plaintifs attorneys for that informa-
tion. As of July 5, attorneys for Doe
declined comment as well.
Abuse allegations
At the center of the complaint are
not only alleged acts of sexual, psy-
chological and spiritual abuse by a
perpetrator that could only be de-
scribed as sexual predator if true,
but the negligent complicity of those
with direct supervisory control of the
priest.
Doe is alleged to have frst sought
Euteneuers spiritual help in late Feb-
ruary 2008 and signed a contract of-
fered by the priest for spiritual min-
istries that included travel to HLI
headquarters for that ministry.
His treatment and abuse is alleged
to have begun within a month and by
April 2008 the priest told Jane Doe
he had received church authoriza-
tion to conduct exorcisms on her.
Te complaint states that with one
break in July 2010, that abuse con-
tinued at various locations through
August-September 2010.
During the following weeks, dur-
ing every meeting, Euteneuer became
progressively persistent in touch-
ing the Plaintif inappropriately. He
kissed the corners of her mouth;
stroked her legs, breasts and things,
caressed her face; laid his body on
top of hers; and frequently explained
full, passionate kisses as blowing the
Holy Spirit into her, the complaint
states. Later abuse included digital
(fnger) penetration of the victim,
requests she touch his penis, contin-
ued fondling and overnight sleeping
in an HLI guest bedroom, the com-
plaint also alleges.
Te lawsuit states Human Life In-
ternational ofcials were fully aware
of their presidents so-called spiri-
tual ministries and exorcism rituals
conducted within their Front Royal,
Virginia, headquarters; and even al-
lowed Jane Doe to be employed there
by her alleged abuser in the midst
of two-and-a-half years of sexually-
tinged spiritual therapy.
Te $5.35-million lawsuit is fled
in the name of Jane Doe in an at-
tempt to keep private the identity of
a victim the complaint describes as a
vulnerable and psychologically trou-
bled, and now emotionally-scarred
woman. Te lawsuit fled by Fairfax
attorneys Demetry Pikrallidas and
Robert T. Hall alleges multiple counts
of Assault, Battery, Intentional Infic-
tion of Emotional Distress, Negligent
Entrustment and Negligent Reten-
tion resulting from the alleged acts
committed by then HLI President Fa-
ther Tomas Euteneuer. A combined
total of $5 million in compensatory
and $350,000 in punitive damages is
being sought from the defendants by
plaintif Jane Doe.

HLI
Reacting to its being cited as a de-
fendant in Jane Does $5.35 million
lawsuit, on June 28 Human Life In-
ternational issued a press release dis-
tancing itself from the alleged sexual
abuse the lawsuit says often occurred
on its property by the priest then
serving as its president.
To the extent Father Euteneuer
has already admitted to engaging in
highly inappropriate and gravely sin-
ful conduct with a young adult wom-
an, we can only emphasize that such
behavior was never within the scope
of his employment with HLI. We in-
tend to vigorously defend HLI from
the false accusations made against
it, and we are undeterred in pursu-
ing HLIs mission to build a culture of
life and protect the unborn, the HLI
press release of June 28 states.
How a jury requested to hear the
lawsuit might react to HLIs attempt
to distance itself from admitted
grave harm to an adult, post-em-
bryonic person the lawsuit states it
eventually employed and set up at a
desk directly across from the ofce
of her alleged abuser, remains to be
seen.
In fact, Euteneuer is the author of
a book on exorcism, Exorcism and
the Church Militant, published by
HLI in June 2010. HLI decided not
to reprint any further editions of the
book after it sold out shortly after
Euteneuers recall. At the time, HLI
ofcials indicated there was nothing
substantially wrong with the books
content but decided that promotion
of exorcism was not a main focus of
the HLI mission.
It was decided not to reprint the
book as HLI no longer had Fr. Eu-
teneuer on hand to promote and
explain his book. HLIs mission has
always been to work for a culture of
life around the world and confront all
who threaten the dignity of the hu-
man person, HLI public information
ofcial Adam Cassandra told us on
June 5.
Arlington Diocese
Plaintif attorney Pikrallidas told
us the Catholic Diocese of Arlington
is included as a defendant because
his client went to a diocese ofcial
identifed as Father Creegan on July
7, 2010 with the story of her abuse
as part of the spiritual ministries
of Father Euteneuer. Euteneuer re-
mained at his HLI post until Aug.
27, 2010, when he was recalled to the
Palm Beach Diocese by his Catholic
superior, Bishop Gerald Barbarito.
Tey knew, Pikrallidas told us of
the Arlington Diocese during that
nearly two month lapse when more
abuse is alleged to have occurred af-
ter a short interlude that July.
However, Arlington Diocese Public
Information ofcial Michael Dono-
hue stated diocese records indicate
diocese ofcials contacted the Palm
Beach Diocese within two days of
Jane Doe bringing her story to them.
Te plaintif did receive psychologi-
cal and spiritual assistance from the
Diocese of Arlington subsequent to
informing us about the abuse, Dono-
hue added.
Rev. Euteneuer is not and has nev-
er been a priest of the Diocese of Ar-
lington. Rev. Euteneuer is a priest of
the Diocese of Palm Beach, Florida,
and was an employee of Human Life
Exorcism lawsuit
Palm Beach Diocese Bishop Gerald Barbarito recalled Eu-
teneuer from his HLI posting seven weeks after Jane Doe
went to Arlington Diocese priest with her allegations of
sexual abuse during exorcisms and other spiritual counsel-
ing sessions.

Exorcism lawsuit
International (HLI), Inc., an inde-
pendent corporation. He was work-
ing for his employer, HLI, subject
to his bishop in the Diocese of Palm
Beach, and not in regular ministry in
the Diocese of Arlington, Donohue
stated.
While the Arlington Diocese does
have a religious ofcial authorized
to perform exorcisms, it was never
Euteneuer, Donahue said. And while
Arlington Diocese authority extends
to Warren County and its Catholic
Church, St. Johns in Front Royal,
Donohue said that despite its reli-
gious ties, as an independent cor-
poration, HLI was not under the
direction or control of the Arlington
Diocese.
Delayed reactions
On Jan. 27, 2011, exactly fve
months after Euteneuers recall to
Palm Beach, Warren County Fire &
Rescue responded to what was of-
cially reported as a medical seizure
at HLIs Shenandoah Shores Road
headquarters. However some wit-
nesses had a diferent perspective,
believing the incident to be a mani-
festation of demonic possession of
a woman at chapel that day. From
information acquired about the inci-
dent, we believe the efected person
is the woman identifed as Jane Doe
in the lawsuit.
I heard from someone who at-
tended that Mass at Front Royal the
other day that people were trauma-
tized by what happened a suddenly
screaming, howling, cursing person
and are demanding to know whats
going on, a Catholic blogger known
as Adele told us at the time.
Five days after that incident, on Feb.
1, 2011, amidst an increasingly shrill
and sometimes threatening debate in
the online Catholic blogosphere over
allegations of sexual abuse by Eu-
teneuer against multiple victims of
the priests spiritual counseling, both
Diocese of Palm Beach Bishop Ger-
ald Barbarito and Euteneuer issued
statements on the Catholic LifeSite-
News website addressing Euteneuers
status.
Father Euteneuer has been under-
going intensive evaluation and coun-
seling to address admitted inappro-
priate crossing of adult heterosexual
boundaries on the occasion of carry-
ing out his priestly ministry, Bishop
Barbarito stated.
In a statement seen as incomplete,
insufciently contrite and oddly ag-
gressive by some, Euteneuer said his
sinful lapses of moral judgment were
his own and that the great majority of
his work while at HLI was all moti-
vated exclusively by my desire to give
priestly assistance to people in great
spiritual distress.
But Euteneuer added in what is
included as part of Jane Does $5.35-
million lawsuit, I must acknowl-
edge, however, that one particularly
complex situation clouded my judg-
ment and led me to imprudent de-
cisions with harmful consequences,
the worst of which was violating the
boundaries of chastity with an adult
female who was under my spiritual
care.
Following Barbarito and Eute-
neuers public statements of Feb. 1,
2011, Interim HLI President Mon-
signor Ignacio Barreiro-Carmbula
issued a statement referencing the
work of two HLI employees and the
many hours they had put in assisting
the young woman gravely harmed in
this case.
But was it too little, too late?
Ultimately, an Arlington County
Civil Court jury may decide if any-
one beyond the perpetrator himself
is culpable for acts alleged to have
been committed on their watch, and
in HLIs case on their property, in the
name of their faith and their God.

continue to afect the mid-Atlantic region as residents struggle with lack
of power or slow restoration of electricity. In an efort to give back to
the community and give residents respite from the heat, ARAMARK
the concessioner of the lodges inside Shenandoah National Park is

Chelseas Epilepsy Walk for SUDEP (Sudden
Unexplained Death in Epilepsy)
Awareness Fundraiser
Te Chelsea Hutchison foundation is a non-proft formed to help individuals, particularly
children and young adults, who have epilepsy. Te main focus is to raise funds to provide grants
for trained seizure-response dogs who may be able to detect an oncoming seizure and provide
warnings about the onset. Te foundation also provides Emft motion monitors for those in
need. Te monitors provides family members with an alarm, if a sleeping child experiences a
seizure.
Te Foundation is hosting its frst Winchester Chapter 5k event to raise awareness and funds
for SUDEP prevention. Te walk is scheduled for Sunday, September 23, 2012. It will be held at
the Valley Health Wellness and Fitness Center, 401 Campus Blvd., Winchester, VA. Te walk up
registration/check in is at 8 am and the walk begins at 9 am.
At this time, we are looking for sponsors, volunteers to help plan the walk and walkers to par-

Give Summer Stressed
Plants a Helping Hand

author & columnist Melinda Myers
Dont let summer stressors ruin your landscapes
good looks. Instead give your plants natural defenses
a boost and keep both vegetable gardens producing
and fowers blooming.
Busy summer schedules can lead to plant neglect
and less-than-picture-perfect gardens. When you
team this with summer heat and drought that can lead
to wilting, brown leaves, and poor growth, and add
insects and diseases that can further weaken and dam-
age plants, gardens can really sufer.
An exciting new organic tool for gardeners is now
available to help. Plant strengtheners, like JAZ sprays,
help boost plants natural defenses so they are better
able to deal with environmental stress, neglect, as well
as insects and disease attacks.
Scientists found that when plants experienced stress
from drought, temperature extremes, insects or dis-
eases they produced certain molecules that activated
their natural defenses. Tey isolated these molecules,
applied them to other plants, and found that the
treated plants were better able to tolerate stress.
Plant strengtheners contain such molecules that
increase natural defenses in plants. One such family
of molecules is the jasmonates, originally identi-
fed in the jasmine plant, that increases hundreds of
natural defense molecules in treated plants. Some of
the natural defenses make the plants more resistant
to pathogens and others help reduce damage from
drought, heat and salt.
While proper care can help increase a plants natu-
ral defenses, plant strengtheners give them an extra
boost to help plants thrive even during periods of
environmental stress. Tese organic products act like
vitamins or immunizations, helping plants deal with
extreme and often unpredictable weather, pest, and
disease challenges.
You can even keep healthy plants performing their
best by proactively using a plant strengthener. By
doing so, youll boost a plants immune system before
environmental stresses hit and ultimately help it thrive
as it faces serious challenges throughout the remain-
der of the season. Its a great way to protect plants
before they become threatened.
Make sure to give your plants proper care through-
out their lifetime. Water thoroughly and as needed.
Ten mulch the soil surrounding your plants with
shredded leaves, evergreen needles, or other organic
materials. Tese conserve moisture, keep roots cool
and moist, suppress weeds, and improve the soil as
they break down.
And, if your plants experience the same problems
each year, it is time to make a change. Move stressed
plants to more suitable growing conditions. Match the
plant to the light, soil, and moisture it prefers. Replace
diseased plants with resistant varieties and provide
proper care.
By taking these steps and investing a bit of time and
energy youll be sure to create a beautiful, healthy and
productive landscape.

Gas line replacement work to
begin on Indian Alley
Te beginning phase of the Indian Alley Improvements Project is
scheduled to begin on Monday, July 16. Te initial work will consist of
Washington Gas replacing their existing gas main in the alley. Te gas
main must be replaced prior to the City replacing the underground wa-
ter and sewer lines. During the period of July 16 thru July 31, from 7:00
am to 5:00 pm, Indian Alley will be closed to thru trafc between Cork
and Wolfe Street. Wolfe Street and Indian Alley north of Wolfe Street
will remain open during this period.
Beginning on August 1, the City will begin the water and sewer main
replacement work on Indian Alley between Cork and Boscawen and
Wolfe Street between Braddock and Indian Alley. Tis section of the
alley and Wolfe Street will be closed continuously throughout the period
of August 1 thru August 31.
Te water and sewer main replacement work on Indian Alley between
Boscawen and Piccadilly will be completed during the period of Sep-
tember 1 thru September 30, during which time this section of the alley
will be closed.
Te City apologizes for any inconvenience this work may create and
thanks everyone for their patience and cooperation.

Skillet Fudge
3 cup sugar
2 cup (12oz) chocolate chips
1 (13oz) can evaporated milk
1 cup 3 minute oats
1/4 cup butter
1/2 cup chopped nuts
1 tsp salt
1 tsp vanilla
1 tsp cinnamon
1/2 cup faked coconut
1 cup miniature marshmallows
Combine sugar, milk, butter, cinnamon and salt in electric skillet.
Bring to a boil over medium heat to 340 degrees. Boil for 7 minutes,
stirring constantly. Turn heat of. Blend in remaining ingredients,
stirring well. Pour into buttered 13x9 inch pan. Chill and cut into
squares. Yield: 3-1/2 pounds.
