Sharna Mandil Treatment Comedy Film Product: We will be creating a short 5-minute comedy film that is based around

d the genre of a comedy. Our comedy film also has a sub-genre of a romance. Genre: Within our primary research, through completing tasks such as brainstorms and simply discussing ideas, we decided as a group to base our 5-minute film around a comedy, with the sub-genre of a romance, as through watching many short videos on YouTube we decided that we liked this genre the best, as the videos we watched received positively good views based on the genre of the videos. We also decided to do the genre of a comedy, as through discussing what genre of film we enjoy the most we concluded that our favorite genre was comedy, but also as there are two girls within the group we discussed the genre of a romance which we also thoroughly enjoy, so based on our interests we decided to incorporate the sub-genre of a romance. A final factor that contributed as to why we chose these two genres is also based on the fact that as we are teenagers, many teenagers our age watch mostly comedy films, and also romance films so basing our film on these genres was important, as we wanted to reach our target audience. Creating a comedy film is hard work as you have to go that extra mile to ensure that your film has plenty of laughs, and is actually funny, so based on the fact that this genre would relatively be a challenge we chose this genre. In our primary research we watched a number of comedy-romance films such as Friends With Benefits and Along Came Polly, in which we picked apart the conventions as chose as a group which ones to include in our short film, and also looked at what angles and camera shots were used in both films so we could gather ideas on how to incorporate this into our film. Target Audience: Our short film is aimed at a 12+ audience, as we believed that this would be the most suitable rating for our film. While discussing potential film ideas we discussed the idea of incorporating a sexual side to the film for example showing a packet of condoms, and the male actor wouldnt have a shirt fn, so it falls into the category of brief nudity, which some parents may not agree on. Therefore we came to the conclusion that the most appropriate film age for our short film would be a 12, due to brief nudity and it includes a slight sexual content. Children from the age of 12 upwards would be interested in this film, as children this age mostly watch comedy/romance films. The age is also appropriate, as our film has no aggressive language violence or gore. The protagonists in the film are also around the same age as our target audience therefore meaning our target audience can relate to the protagonist. Context: Our film will be available to view within cinemas as well as TV channels such as Film4 and Sky Comedy. Our film will also be uploaded onto YouTube for our audiences to watch for free.

Sharna Mandil Representation: Within our film, we have represented the male protagonist as being dorky and nerdy, who is unlucky in love. This conforms to the typical stereotype of male nerds, as they typically dont get to date beautiful girls as theyre seen as inferior as theyre not popular. We have also gone against the typical stereotype of a very pretty female, going on a date with a geek. This goes against the typical stereotype of pretty girls going out with good looking boys, as our female protagonist has chosen to go on a date with someone who is seen as inferior and not popular like her due to his geeky ways. Media Language: Throughout our film we will be breaking down technical aspects of Mise-en-Scene, cinematography and sound to represent the genre of our film. For example we will be adding and using fast-paced non-diegetic music during the editing process to fit in with our genre, and set the scene which will allow the audience to establish what genre the film is. The upbeat, comical music will connote to the audience that our film is a comedy as during our primary research when watching comedy films on YouTube many of the videos used fast-paced, jazzy sounding music to fit in with the stereotypical genre of a comedy. Other conventions we will be using are the costumes of the protagonist who is represented as being the nerdy character. His costume will consist of geeky clothes, and possibly oversized glasses to again fit in with the stereotypical geeky character, and will allow the audience to establish genre and narrative. Clothing such as the ones our character will be wearing, are typical clothes that a geek would wear in comedy films such as President Skroob in Spaceballs 1987, which is a comedy. A final example of media language that we want to convey throughout the majority of out 5-minute film is the through the use of non-verbal communication. The non-verbal communication is explored through the protagonists body language, as there is a possibility that the characters in our short film will have no diegetic dialogue, and will therefore mime instead. Miming is again not a typical convention of a comedy film, however many films used to use mime to represent the comedy genre.
