WAP Specification
What is WAP?
 Wireless application protocol (WAP) is an
application environment and set of
communication protocols.

• WAP stands for Wireless Application Protocol

• WAP is an application communication protocol

• WAP is used to access services and informatio

• WAP is inherited from Internet standards

Examples of WAP use

Checking train table information

Ticket purchase

Flight check in

Viewing traffic information

Looking up stock values

Why Choose WAP?
 In the past, wireless Internet access has been limited by the
capabilities of handheld devices and wireless networks.

 WAP utilizes Internet standards such as XML, user datagram

protocol (UDP), and Internet protocol (IP).

 Internet standards such as hypertext markup language

(HTML), HTTP, TLS and transmission control protocol (TCP) are
inefficient over mobile networks, requiring large amounts of
mainly text-based data to be sent.

The boom in mobile communications would

be phenomenal.

• Indeed, the WAP browser should do for

mobile Internet what Netscape did for the
Internet.
WAP Applications

 The way in which mobile wireless devices are

used differs dramatically from the way we use
PCs.

 On a PC we may spend hours constantly

connected to the Web hunting.

 The wireless industry hopes that WAP devices

will become popular .

 news feeds, stock quotes, and weather forecasts

Advantages
Banking, corporate database access, and a
messaging interface

 WAP provides a markup language and a transport protocol

Wireless technology may supplement or replace

hard wired implementations in security systems
for homes or office buildings.
LIMITATIONS
WAP and WAP-based services couldn't completely facilitate
such transformation due to limitations of mobile devices and
mobile networks, such as:

Small screens
Limited device memory
Less powerful CPUs
Unreliable connections
High latency
Conclusions
 WAP defines an alternative to the Web for content
delivery networks.

 Wireless devices like cell phones and pagers have

relatively small displays.

 Wireless devices usually have no mouse and a

limited keyboard; keyboards are often used one-
handed.

 Wireless devices contain relatively little memory

and processing power.

 Wireless networks may or may not support IP
