The Foot Soldiers:
FMCG companies had started to build robust chains. With 1275 depots, Brooke Bonds large field force was part

of unique cash based direct selling system.


Coupled with the Hindustan Lever network, it had Indias

Largest retail distribution chain.

Sachet Revolution: (Pronounced as Sashe!) Retailing in rural India was very difficult because Affordability, Size, Packaging, Distribution everything had to be different.
The answer came along in the mid 1990s in the form of

Sachets.(20ml plastic pouches)

The Big Push:
Things were reasonably quiet in retail for nearly half a

decade.
Suddenly, All big players in Indian industry wanted a slice

of the retail pie-The Tatas, Piramal Enterprises, ITC & S Kumars.


Example: Crossroads by Piramal 150,000 sq.ft mall!!

The Mall Bug:
Suburbs in Delhi & Mumbai saw Multiple malls of average

size 250000 sq. ft spring up. Also in tier-II cities.


About 600 malls were to come up by the end of the decade,

from 20 in 2004.

In a country where everyone drank tea, it was a

revolutionary development.

Bangalore based coffee planters and exporters

amalgamated bean coffee developed a chain of cafes across the country Caf Coffee Day (to Target Youth)

Second Movers:
Competition began in retail industry. Shoppers Stop Vs Westside. e.g. It took Shoppers Stop almost 8 years to become a market leader whereas Westside grew to about half its size within just 2 years. Almost 75% Of Shoppers Stop sales came from Brands

supplied by other producers while 95% of Westside sales came from its own in-store brands.

2001
Bigger Bazaar: Finally, India had its own hypermarket. On 27 June, the RPG group opened its hypermarket, Giant, in Hyderabad. By the end of the first day, the store had 12000 visitors, and notched up sales of Rs. 30 Lakh. RPG gained a first mover advantage!

Size Matters:
1990s, organized retail in India added just 1 million sq. ft. 2003 alone 10 million sq. ft. was picked up by retailers. In 2004, at least 50 new malls of 100000 sq. ft. and above

were slated to open.

Dark Horse:
Indias new biggest retailer arrived Kishore Biyani!! Pantaloon in 2003-2004 - top line Rs.650 crore a clear

Rs.100 crore more than RPG, the second largest player in Indian market.
Shoppers stop was the third position with revenues of

Rs.400 crore.

More of the same:
In this era a few specialty malls cropped up.
While some focused on Luxury brands, others went for

Gold, Jewellery, Furniture and even weddings.

Green Evolution:

Reliance Industries, Aditya Birla Group, Pantaloon Retail these big corporate jumped into retailing of fresh vegetables, fruits and groceries.
Of the retail pie that was worth Rs 12 Lakh crore in 2006, 63% was food and Groceries alone.

Shutters Down: Subhiksha Trading Services, went neck deep in Rs. 600 crore debt. (+ Rs. 180 crore raised internally as shareholders funds). In 2009, it had no money for operations. Finally there was demand for the government to initiate audit of its accounts.

Foreign Hand: In partnership with Bharati, Wal-Mart was perfecting its back end system at its five stores in India ( 3 in Punjab and 1 each in Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh).

The Gates Open:
The government has now given its nod to increased FDI in

retail- 51% in Multi-brand, and 100% in single-brand retail.(????)
