INTRODUCTION
Compact audio/video interface for transmitting digital data.

First & only industry supported, uncompressed, all-digital audio/video interface.

Provides an interface between any A/V source, over a single cable.

Supports up to 8 channels of uncompressed audio. Supports standard, enhanced, or high-definition video, plus multi-channel digital audio on a single cable.

OVERVIEW
Released on December 9,2002. Developed by Hitachi, Panasonic, Sony, Toshiba, Philips, Thomson and Silicon Image. Deliver high quality sound or vision without the risk of quality loss. Pictures are smoother and sharp. Works well with fixed-pixel displays such as LCD ,Plasma ,LED . Signals are digital in nature.

TYPICAL HDMI CABLE

19 Wires wrapped into a single wire.
Carry a bandwidth of 5 Gbps(gigabits per second).

WORKING
Uses TRANSITION MINIMIZED DIFFERENTIAL SIGNALING (TMDS) protocol. Signal is encoded to protect it from degrading. Codes an 8-bit data into a 10-bit signal. Uses differential transmission. An inverse copy of the signal is also sent.

Continued.
Receiver measures the difference between the signal and its inverse.

Enables HDMI to achieve high data rates.

Data rate is 25 times that of USB 2.0

TMDS CHANNELS
3 Data channels that carry audio/video data. 1 Clock channel for synchronizing every operation of HDMI. Audio, video and auxiliary data is transmitted across the three TMDS data channels. The data channel operates in one of the 3 modes:

Video Data Period.

Data Island period. Control period.

CONSUMER ELECTRONIC CONTROL (CEC) CHANNEL

Allows all attached devices to communicate bi-directionally. The most commonly expected applications and benefits for CEC include: One touch play. One touch system power off. Tuner Control.

DISPLAY DATA CHANNEL (DDC)

Configuration and status exchange between a single transmitter and a single receiver. Set of protocols between a display and graphics adapter. Transmitter reads the receivers E-EDID ROM. Determine the audio/visual capabilities.

Automatically adjust the video and audio output.

THE CABLE
19 wires wrapped in a single cable. Carry a bandwidth of 5 Gbps. TMDS DATA CHANNELS (6 PINS) Carry the digital data representing audio and video. Audio data are sent as HDMI packets. TMDS CLOCK CHANNEL (2 PINS) A reference clock signal. CONSUMER ELECTRONICS CONTROL (CEC) (1 PIN) Enables the device to automatically control other attached devices.

HIGH-BANDWIDTH DIGITAL CONTENT PROTECTION (HDCP)

Developed by Intel Corporation. Provides copy protection over HDMI. Prevent copying of digital audio and video content as it travels across HDMI, DVI etc. Encrypts a digital signal with a key.

ing product. If authentication fails then the signal fails, which means no picture on the TV screen.

Handshaking is making sure that all of your HDMI devices can recognize each other. Exchanges a 20bit key called a Key Selection Vector or KSV. Uniquely identifies transmitter or reciever.

HDMI v/s DVI

Digital Video Interface, or DVI, is the predecessor of HDMI. Uses TMDS protocol.

There are two important differences between DVI and HDMI:

HDMI incorporates content security that is called HDCP. HDMI can support both audio and video on the same cable. Backward compatibility for video exists between HDMI and DVI, because HDMI evolved from DVI.
