Viewing School Culture in the Context of the Larger Culture Millions of children in the U.S. live in poverty without proper health care. Most U.S. schools are underfunded. Poorly regulated child-care centers damage childrens creativity and development. The federal government provides inadequate funding for students with disabilities.

Societal Problems
Many of the social evils that have long victimized so many of our citizens are still present, and still harming our nations children. These include: racism, classism, sexism, homophobia, and religious prejudice. How should schools address the societal problems that impinge on our childrens growth and development?

Political Action
Form partnerships with parents, the community, nearby universities, and the corporate sector. Work with the media. Communicate concerns to state and national legislators. Educate fellow citizens and policy makers on critical issues. Continuously critique school structures, curriculum, instruction, and assessment practices. Develop schools as moral communities characterized by democratic learning.
