Fire Alarm System

Introduction

History of Fire Alarm System

Three phases of fire alarm system: Conventional System Microprocessor/ Semi-Addressable System Intelligent/ Addressable System

Fire alarm system consists of: 1. Fire alarm control panel 2. Initiating devices (Detectors, Break glass and etc.) 3. Notification appliances (Bell, Sounder and etc.)

Conventional System

Initiating devices are categorized into group- fall under zones. Devices in each zone triggered, fire alarm will indicate on that particular zone but not specifying which device. Devices allocation for zoning is extremely important for a good design. Class B wiring- More wires needed where each zone requires individual pair of wires. Substantial cabling of system. Troublesome in troubleshooting.

Schematic for Conventional System

Microprocessor/ Semi-Addressable System

Every detectors in a zone connected to a RPPU ( Remote Programmable Unit) or RMIP (Remote Monitoring Interface Unit). Whereas the control unit will connect back to the main panel with a communication cable with data traffic. When the device in each zone triggered, it will give signal to the control and it will notify the main panel which zone of devices detected fire break out. Class B wiring- Save wiring and also provide flexibility in modification compare to conventional system. If the control unit failed, the devices under the zone also disabled.

Schematic for Semi-Addressable System

Intelligent/ Addressable System

Each device have its own address in the system. Once the device triggered, signal will show on fire alarm panel exactly which device it is. This help to identify the location of fire more efficiently and accurately. Class A wiring Close loop connection- Lesser wires. Class B wiring - Open loop connection- Also lesser wires compare to conventional system. Easy in wiring installation and handling. Easy in troubleshooting and configuration of system.

ADVANTAGES of Addressable System

Simplicity- Lesser wires in system wiring. Efficiency- Pin-point notification when fire breakout. Sensitivity- Self adjustment of detectors to suit site conditions. Intelligent- Notification of servicing by devices itself. Convenience- Web-based/ Networking control. User-friendly- Graphically mimic via monitors available with specified areas/ zones. Safety- Provide better, immediate notification and protection when fire break out.
