Physical & Data Link Layers: TCP/IP doesnt define any specific protocol. Supports all the standard & proprietary protocols.

Network Layer: Internetworking Protocol(IP) Address Resolution Protocol(ARP) Click to edit Master subtitle style Reverse Address Resolution Protocol(RARP) Internet Control Message Protocol(ICMP) Internet Group Message Protocol(IGMP)

Internetworking Protocol(IP): Transmission Mechanism provided by TCP/IP. An Unreliable & Connectionless protocol Also defined as best effort delivery service. Address Resolution Protocol(ARP): Used to associate an IP address with the physical address. to edit Master subtitle style Click ARP request is broadcast + ARP reply is unicast.

Reverse Address Resolution protocol(RARP): q Allows a host to address from physical to logical. q RARP request broadcast + RARP reply packets unicast. Internet Control Message Protocol(ICMP): q Send notifications to the sender. q Send 5 types of error reporting messages +4 types of edit Mastermessages. query subtitle style Click to Internet Group Message protocol(IGMP): q Group Management Protocol. q Provides 3 types of messages.

Transport Layer: Includes the following protocols: User Datagram Protocol(UDP) Transmission Control Protocol(TCP) Stream Control Transmission Protocol(SCTP) User Datagram Protocol(UDP): Process to edit Master subtitle style to Process Communication Click Called as Connectionless, Unreliable transport protocol UDP packet is called as user datagram.

Transmission Control Protocol(TCP): Provides Process to Process Communication Connection Oriented , Reliable transport protocol. TCP Uses Four Timers: Retransmission Persistence Keepalive Timewaited. Stream Control transmission protocol(SCTP): SCTP=UDP+TCP ( Best Features ) Click to edit Master subtitle style SCTP is a Message Oriented, reliable Protocol Provides Flow Control, Error-Control,Congestion Control.

TCP/IP Model vs OSI Model

Sr. No.

TCP/IP Reference Model

OSI Reference Model Defined before advent of internet.

1 2 3 4 5 6

Defined after the advent of Internet.

TCP/IP supports Internet working. Internet working not supported. Loosely layered.. Protocol Dependent standard.

Strict layering. Protocol independent standard.

TCP reliably delivers packets, IP All packets are reliably delivered. does not reliably deliver packets.

Service interface and protocols were not clearly distinguished before.

Service interface and protocols are clearly distinguished.
