What is a Pronoun?

A pronoun is a word used in place of a noun or another pronoun.

Heres an Example
1.Mrs Turnbull teaches English. 2. She teaches English. In the second sentence, she is a pronoun that takes the place of the noun Mrs Turnbull.

Personal Pronouns
Personal pronouns refer to specific persons or things. Douglas reads stories. He likes fairy tales.

The word he is a personal pronoun that refers to Douglas.

English has three types of personal pronouns: Pronouns used for subjects, Pronouns used for objects, and Pronouns used to show possession

Subject Pronouns
Singular 1st person I =(the speaker) Plural We= (the speakers)

2nd person You (the listener)


3rd person He =(a male talked about) She=( a female talked about) It=( an thing or animal talked about)

You= (the listeners)


They=(a group talked about)

EXAMPLES:
-I am a teacher.
-You are a doctor (singular). John is a mechanic.

I am a teacher (no change).


You are a doctor (no change). He is a mechanic.

Betty is a waitress. The door is open.

She is a waitress. It is open.

Lorena and I are happy.


You and Luis are clients.

We are happy.
You are clients.

-Ines and Ana are from Brazil. = They are from Brazil. Jose and Manuel are from Mexico. = They are from Mexico. Carmen and Martin are from Uruguay. = They are from Uruguay.

Practice
Complete the sentences. Use you, he, she, it, we, you, or they. Substitute the word in parenthesis. Example: ____ is a nurse. (Sandra). = She is a nurse.

OBJECT PRONOUNS
Object pronouns are used for direct objects, indirect objects, and objects of prepositions: I saw him / her / it / them / you yesterday. I gave the message to him / her / them / you (or I gave him / her / them / you the message). She bought a gift for him / them / you / me / us (or She bought him / them / you / me / us a gift). They were standing near (next to, beside, behind, near, in front of, etc.) me / us / you / him / her / it.
