Plant layout refers to the arrangement of physical facilities such as machinery, equipment, furniture etc. with in the factory building in such a manner so as to have quickest flow of material at the lowest cost and with the least amount of handling in processing the product from the receipt of material to the shipment of the finished product.

According to J. L. Zundi, Plant layout ideally involves allocation of space and arrangement of equipment in such a manner that overall operating costs are minimized. According to Riggs, the overall objective of plant layout is to design a physical arrangement that most economically meets the required output quantity and quality.

Product

Layout. Process Layout. Fixed Position/Stationary Layout.

Layout that uses standardized processing operation to achieve smooth , rapid and high volume flow. Here machines are arranged according to need of the product and in the same sequence as the operation are necessary for manufacture.

High rate of output. Low unit cost. Labour specialization. Low material handling cost. High utilization of labour and equipment. Established routing and scheduling. Short processing time.

Layout that can handle varied processing requirements. Here all machines performing similar type of operation are grouped together at one location in the process layout. Thus here facilities are grouped together according to their functions. Eg. All drilling machines are located at one place known as drilling section.

Can handle a variety of processing requirement. Machines breakdown doesnt result in shutdown. Equipment used is less costly. Wide flexibility in production facility. Each production unit of system works independently. High utilization of facility. Variety makes the job interesting.

Layout in which the product or project remains stationary and workers, materials and equipment are moved as needed. Eg. 1.Employed in large project type organization. 2.Construction of Dam. 3.ISRO 4.Helicopter. 5.Nuclear engineerinng division of BHEL

The product because of its size and/or weight remains in one location processes are brought to it.
