- Afonso de Albuquerque was a fantastic explorer exploring many parts of Asia and other parts of the world. Without him we probably wouldnt know what spice islands are in the middle of the pacific. And India (my home country) I hope you enjoy this presentation! -

Early Years
Afonso De Albuquerque was born on December 16th 1453 in the town of Alhandra, a place near Lisbon in Alexandria. His father had a very important position in court while his mother was a housewife. He had a younger brother called Martim, who lost his life fighting on his elder brothers side. (Fighting the Arabs) He finished his education properly and studied maths and Latin at a well know Portuguese Court called Afonso V, where he made friends with prince John (Future king of Portugal). After that he served ten years in Arzila, Morocco. After he arrived back in Portugal. He was ready to start his first expedition to the east, India.

This is Afanso De Albuquerque when he was a young man. He was 27 years old at the time and this is the time where he went to Morocco for ten years. This picture shows that hes wearing a Moroccan shirt, traditional stitching around and a black hat.

First Expedition
Afonso De Albuquerques first expedition was to Goa, in India in the year 1503 He went along with his cousin Francisco De Albuquerque. Each Received three ships sailing with Duarte Pacheco Pereira and Nicolau Coelho. He went by way of the cape of good hope in South Africa. His aim was to conquer the island of Socotra and to explore more of India and the Arabian Sea. After another one year he returned back to Portugal, ready to sail to Mozambique in South Africa.

More to Explore
Albuquerque travelled south to Mozambique in South Africa. He only stayed there for about six months, but he made great use of his time. In the Mozambique channel he rescued Joo Da Nova. They sailed again to east Africa and managed to conquer a lot of Arab Cities near the east African coast. They conquered Socotra again and built a fortress there to separate the Indian Ocean from the red sea. Then they went to explore the city of Cannanore, in Kerala. Then they sent 500 men (including him self) to the Persian Gulf to

Arrested at Cannanore
In 1509, Albuquerque got arrested in Cannanore. He was released after three months and then went to Kochi. (a town in India) after a year he then went to Gujarat (Extreme west of India) and conquered the Sultan. He then went to Malacca in Malaysia and Spice Islands. He fought with the rulers. And wanted The land to be Portugals, but he failed and The sultans orders was to leave 19 Portuguese prisoners behind in Malaysia.

Conquering Goa once again

He Conquered Goa from 1510 1515 but then sadly died the at sea when he was about to go back to Portugal. He coincidently died at the same date he was born, so his birth anniversary and death anniversary are the same. We Know him as a great explorer today, and you can still me see much of his information at Wikipedia today. Thank you For listening to my Presentation.
