GLOBAL WARMING

BY M.Sreedhar Patnaik

WHAT IS GLOBAL WARMING?

It is an increase in the average temperature of earth atmosphere.

THE FACTORS CAUSING GLOBAL WARMING

Solar variation is one of the reason of global warming. The change in amount of radiant energy emitted by the sun is known as solar variation. About 30% of sunlight towards earth is deflected by the outer atmosphere and scattered back into space. The remaining reaches the planets surface and is reflected again as a type of slow moving energy called infrared radiation.

Greenhouse Gases
These are nothing but carbon dioxide, methane, ozone, water vapours etc. The heat caused by infrared radiation is absorbed by Greenhouse Gases which retards or slows the escape from the atmosphere.

Greenhouse Effect
Greenhouse Gases regulate the climate by trapping and holding heat, which provide warm blanket around earth, is called Greenhouse Effect. Scientists estimate that without greenhouse effect earths temperature would have been less than 30o c which is too cold to sustain our current ecosystem. Greenhouse effect is essential for the life on earth.

OUR CONTRIBUTION TO GREENHOUSE EFFECT

Human activities distort and accelerate the natural process by creating more greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.
Air Pollution Burning of natural gases, coal & oil, including gasoline for automobile engine increase the concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere.

Many industries produce long lasting industrial gases that do not occur naturally, contribute significantly to greenhouse effect. Soil pollution Excessive usage of fertilizers, pesticides and other agrochemical products increase the level of methane & nitrous oxide. Deforestation Trees use CO2 and give

off O2 in its place, which helps to create the optimal balance of gases in the atmosphere.

Population Population is major reason for the global warming as many people use fossil fuels for heating, transportation and manufacturing purpose. So the level of greenhouse gases continues to increase.

EFFECT OF GLOBAL WARMING

Melting of glaciers due to rise in temp. of atmosphere.

EFFECT OF GLOBAL WARMING

Due to melting of glaciers, sea levels are expected to rise. Floods and droughts will become more common. Due to presence of CO2 in a excessive quantity ocean acidification will occur, which is hazardous for marine life as well.

HOW CAN WE DEFEAT GLOBAL WARMING ?

Use solar, wind and tidal energy for generation of electricity instead of thermal energy. i.e. coal, wherever possible. Minimize the usage of hazardous chemicals or go for the alternatives of it. Do not dispose the industrial waste without neutralizing it.

HOW CAN WE DEFEAT GLOBAL WARMING ?

Try to use less polluting vehicles or do not use vehicles wherever possible. Plant as many trees as you can to have a balanced environment. Create awareness about global warming in society.

If you fail to do so, then here is your future earth
