Introduction

The purpose of this project is to design and to create a persistence of vision (POV) display. This display will allow users to upload an image to be displayed This phenomenon makes one feel fast moving/changing objects to appear continuous

PRINCIPLE
A persistence of vision (POV) refers to the phenomenon of the human eye in which an afterimage exists for a brief time (10 ms).

A POV display exploits this phenomena by spinning a one dimensional row of LED's through a two dimensional space at such a high frequency that a two dimensional display is visible.

Abstract

We want to design a display which is cost effective and can be used widely for advertisement and other displays. This can be achieved by using POV. Only 8 LEDs can do the work of nearly 525 LEDs. We will be using an array of LEDs which will be controlled by a microcontroller. These LEDs and microntroller will be mounted on a motor which will rotate at a high speed. As the LEDs will rotate at such a high speed they will be perceived as characters by our eyes. The characters to be displayed will be controlled by the sequence and frequency of blinking these LEDs.

Components Required

Microcontroller-Pic16f877 or 8051 or ATmega644 RGB LEDs DC Motor of high RPM IR sensor or hall effect sensor Battery PCB Led driver

Microcontroller
A microcontroller is a small computer on a single integrated circuit containing a processor core, memory, and programmable input/output peripherals. We intend on using 8051 or PIC16f877a or Atmega644 It will be used to control the blinking of LEDs to display the desired character

RGB LED
These 5mm units have four pins - Cathode is the longest pin. One for each color and a common cathode. They are connected according to the colour required

DC motor

A DC motor is an electric motor that runs on direct current (DC) electricity. A current-carrying conductor generates a magnetic field; when this is then placed in an external magnetic field, it will experience a force proportional to the current in the conductor, and to the strength of the external magnetic field. It will be used to rotate the LEDs at a high speed thereby creating the phenomenon of POV

Sensor-IR/Hall effect
A Hall effect sensor is a transducer that varies its output voltage in response to a magnetic field. A photodiode is a type of photo detector capable of converting light into either current or voltage, depending upon the mode of operation. One of these sensor will be used to count RPM of the rotating LEDs.

PCB
A printed circuit board or PCB is used to mechanically support and electrically connect electronic components using conductive path ways , tracks or signal traces etched from copper sheets laminated onto a non conductive substrate.

Applications
Applications can find their way into cost effective solutions for large public displays, information systems.

It can directly replace Railway station information displays, bus stands and many more places.

Future modifications
By using 2d array of LEDs we can display 3d images HD images can be displayed by using super bright LEDs Wireless transmission of data to the microcontroller making it more portable
