This is a business initiative - this isn't about turning Mahindra into an NGO. The way companies build brands has evolved. In version 2.0, we saw companies come in with a larger purpose and meaning, beyond the business. Now, we are trying to build a 21st century corporation, by energising people and giving them a core purpose to be part of. Spark the Rise' is about co-creating with communities around us, says Mahindra.

BAREFOOT POWER
Barefoot Power began in 2005 when co-founders Stewart Craine and Harry Andrews saw the opportunity to reduce poverty In countries at the base of the economic pyramid ( BoP) Providing communities with access to energy and, therefore, providing them with one of the necessary steps to eliminate poverty and propel economic development . Barefoot Power has developed solar LED based solutions which provide 5-15 times more light than kerosene based alternatives. The payback for these solar lighting solutions can be as little as 3 -6 months

INNOVATION AT MAHINDRA

FIVE ELEMENTS AT MAHINDRA TO FOSTER INNOVATION

One, innovation has to start with insights about a customer. Without identifying a need, you cant come up with new products or processes. Two, great products have great designs .
Three, you have to encourage experimentation. You must hire people who dont listen to you, You have to create a sandbox where people can play and fail, often and early. The organization must celebrate failure.

Four, unlike Xerox PARCs inventions, innovation must add value to the companys bottom line.
Five, you need to have a sales plan. No innovation sells itself; companies have to find ways of packaging and marketing it

UTILIT Y VEHICLES

Mahindras ambition for the Group was backed by action . In the mid-1990s, he approved the development of a new car concept In spite of not having the financial resources of his Western competitors. The new sports-utility vehicle named Scorpio

It also demonstrated that Indian companies, particularly the Mahindra Group, excelled in a new category of innovation: frugal engineering
It was this important capability to innovate at very low cost It also enabled them to sell products into large segments that had, on average, low individual purchasing power but could result in significant cumulative sales and profits

THE SACTOR PROJECT

Mahindra & Mahindras Farm Equipment Sector (FES) has featured in the top 10 list of most innovative Indian companies compiled by the Wall Street Journal Star t with the pictures not with the numbers. Mahindra innovated a low horsepower tractor for India since farming land is highly fragmented . Mahindra used that tractor to create a vibrant hobby farming segment in the US

MAHINDRA SHAAN

The Mahindra Shaan is one such product resulting from this culture of innovation.
Indias first multi-utility tractor, the Shaan helps in farming activities and facilitates transportation as well. It has been designed keeping in mind the needs of the young and progressive farmer

The product has positively impacted the lives of several customers across the country, In early 2007, Mahindra Tractors launched Indias first 5% biodiesel tractor which is the outcome of the sectors relentless focus on R&D and its commitment to a cleaner environment
