Synopsis of the case

CareGroup is a hospital group that offers a variety of communitybased health care services.
It was formed in a three-way merger - goals to push back against the HMOs, - to integrate services across hospitals, - To reduce cost. This merger experienced considerable difficulties in operational coordination across the hospitals due to their history of independence It showed positive financial returns.

Hospitals in CareGroup were brought together to a

centralized system and gained a good reputation in IT organization ranking.

Later a researcher executed an application without

terminating it, which caused huge data communication traffics and led to a network crash.
The network crash could not be fixed internally and

the CIO called Cisco for help

Cont..
While Cisco engineers were fixing the problem,

CareGroup employees resorted back to paper based forms as a costly and unorganized replacing to their networked computers.
The network was restored five days after the crash

Post-crash repairing commenced to help recovery and

further potential crashes.

Analysis of the case

Different medical departments shared customers
They shared data They accessed a centralized system They had linked processes

Problem faced by Care group

The proprietary network was poor in design .
It lacked a standardized operational flow

Computer system disaster recovery procedures were not

planned and backup process in case of emergency

Too heavily dependent on one single employee Lacked an effective strategy to manage customer

relationships and customer-centric requests.

Lesson 5- Changes done by Caregroup in the Network

Network change control board created a multidisciplinary

membership decided to approve the network infrastructure changes. The changes were classified into 3 categories:
Minimal Moderate Substantial impact

Changes to the network were made during certain timing Before changes were made testing and incident recovery

plan had to be submitted as an evidence.

Lesson 6 : Adapt to externalities

As a result of merger, organization and other external

activities and events, CareGroup had evolved into its out of spec condition.
For possible impacts on exiting IT functionality the

November network outage led IT staff to examine all events more carefully

Changes made in response to network outage

Improvements put in place Reorganising of radiology computer network, the research campus network and clinical campus network 40 dial-up computers in strategic areas of hospital For entry of order on patient flows, introduction of clinical dial-up Replacement of redundant core network instead of existing core network.

Cont....
Improvements that are completed within the next

week.
Upgrade of non core network to increase the stability of

the network. Scheduling downtime on weekends 2:00-5:00 am to make network changes. Change in control process with all engineering changes overseen by cisco.
