Nokia, Sriperumbudur plant was installed in the year 2006

and since its inception it has reached a milestone in

production by producing 500 million phones and over.

It has around 9100 full-time employees, working across

three shifts, and 24X7.

People travel from various districts around sriperumbudur, and amongst them 55% are female.

Nokia runs around 175 buses across the shifts and the buses

cover a radius of 100 km (max) around the factory in all

directions.

Since people come from various parts of the state, and moreover the factory runs 24X7, it become mandatory that they reach in time. In order to reduce cost, one of the idea is to relocate the people from far away places to a nearby location, i.e., in 45 km bracket. For this purpose a research should be carried out.

The project is to minimize the cost on a longer run with a

broader view of things, and make the transportation more

effective and efficient.

It is carried out by conducting an extensive research and

finding out whether employees are willing to move within 45

km.

It also involves determining the necessities for relocation along with the possible areas for it as well.

To find out the number of people coming from places beyond 45 kilometers. To find the reasons behind employees staying in their current location. Also to find the associated factors such as the preferences for stay among male and female counterparts and determine whether they are

willing to relocate.

Finally to come up with possible suggestions for relocation according to both employee as well as employers perspective, without being biased on the survey that was conducted to employees.

Initially, a depth study was undertaken in order to find out

the number of employees using the nokia buses and also how
the transport is being operated.

It was followed by a preliminary survey where a open ended

questionnaire was framed in order to find the reasons of stay

in a particular area from employees perspective.

Then

final

survey

was

undertaken

and

detailed

questionnaire which gives all details about relocation and reasons for stay was framed and circulated.

We conducted the survey as a unbiased estimator, and as the research methodology suggests, the average variance is better for us, compared to a consistent estimator. We were at ease to remove errors or biases like Selection bias, over coverage, under coverage, measurement error, processing error, while we could have random sampling error and non-response error in our sample. We did not take any inputs from survey respondents for the relocation idea, as the relocation has to be unbiased from the survey idea

After the survey, analysis of data was done with the help of

excel and SPSS, and various conclusions were drawn out of it.

Finally, around 20 locations within 45 kilometres radius was

chosen and a feasibility study was carried out by finding

various facilities available in those areas from internet as well as personal inquiry.

This was carried out by obtaining data from the transport

department , where the pick-up points of the employees were

taken into consideration.

They were sorted and frequency distribution was drawn with

the help of SPSS which helped in finding out the exact number of people staying within and over 45 km radius.

FINDINGS :

After running through the transport master data it was found that 9685 people were using nokia buses for travelling to their homes. This data was taken into analysis and sorted based on

area wise as well as distance of those areas from nokia

factory.

After sorting this data , a detailed list of employees

staying above 45 km radius was found and the number

counted upto 4227, which comes around 45 %.

SURVEY-1

Objective of the study:

To get an insight from the employees on the reason for their stay at the present residence Use the factors obtained in this prliminary survey to the final survey Since the questions are framed in open ended manner the result obtained will lead us to lots of ideas for further research. Also to find out how preferences of accomodation changes according to gender.

Findings :
After floating the questionnaire among 100 employees,
they came up lots of factors that determine the preference of stay Many were ready to fill the questionnaire but few were reluctant and asked a lot of questions Since the questionnaire was open ended , most of them were out of ideas and needed guidance.

Factors obtained through survey:

Nearby office Proximity Within city limits Availability of resources Family Employement oppurtunities for family More facilities Low rent Medical facilities Ease of travelling to hometown Availability of transport

Water facilities Educational instituitions Calm environment Stay at relatives place Shopping Availability of houses for rent School facilities Close to friends place Entertainment

Factors taken for final survey:

After the preliminary data analysis manually and then factor analysis using SPSS, we came up with 5 different factors. Hometown Facilities (Schools hospitals etc.) Safety Availability of Nokia Bus Cost of living.

Inferences:
Most of the employees, atleast 80% of them , chose to stay at the present place because of their own house as well as

family. This can also be attributed due to the availablity of

Nokia buses at their place.

Few of them chose to stay at their relatives place, and this

is mainly because they can save rent cost and since buses are available foe free, they take this liberty.

This survey was more organized and was to the point, where

the exact thoughts and reasons for stay in a particular area

were extracted from the employees through a questionnaire.

It was a close ended one, where the employees were given

options and were asked to chose amongst them.

It is clearly seen that the main reason behind people staying

in their current location is because of hometown, and this can

be attributed due to availability of Nokia buses to their doorsteps as well.

Also it can be found that, among the people who are willing to relocate , the major factor which would satisfy them in that process was found to be safety.

This is the final part of the project, where locations around 45 km radius were taken and the possible and most feasible area for relocation is suggested. This study involves determining the facilities available in those area, cost of living, availability of transport and modes to reach them as well as safety. Finally 19 such locations were taken into account and analyzed based on the above factors.

Almost 50% of the total sample are in rented house out of

only 20% stay in their home town, these people must be

our target since they can be relocated with lesser difficulties

Single male can also be relocated if the necessary facilities determined through the survey are met up with. Avadi , Ponaamalle, Kanchipuram and chengalpet can be considered as the safe bet for relocation in the compass with cente being nokia.

It has been observed that many are not willing to relocate

because they stay at their hometown, with bus facility

available to them at doorstep.

But 40 % of the people are willing to relocate if the necessary facilities mentioned above are available with safety being number 1. If the areas mentined in recommandations can be looked over as a spot for relocation it is easy to pull over 75% of the total crowd staying beyond 45 kilometres.
