A Green Glass recycling company.

Plant Cell

Cell Membrane
Locked Gates
Gate guarding the factory compound keeps people out and allows certain people with access inside. This serves as a form of security as well.

Function: The cell membrane regulates and controls what enters and leaves the cell, and protects and supports the cell.

Cytoplasm
Ground in factory compound
The ground of the factory compound holds several buildings that perform different functions Function: The cytoplasm is the material inside that contains the cell organelles.

Golgi Apparatus
Coloring and packaging center
The coloring and packaging center for the glassware is where the glass is added to their desired colors, and the completed glass is then packaged in boxes, ready for selling. Function: The Golgi apparatus is where glucose (sugar) is added to proteins to create glycoprotein, and then the modified proteins are put in vesicles to be transported out of the cell.

Ribosomes
Molding machine
The molding machine makes new glassware from the melted glass. Function: Proteins are made from amino acids in the ribosomes.

Mitochondria
Fuel and electrical supply
The fuel feeds and powers the boiler, and the electric supply powers the entire company. Function: The mitochondria releases ATP (energy) that powers all the life processes in the cell.

Vacuole
Dumpsite and water storage house
The dumpsite is the place for all unwanted products, and the water storage house simply stores water. Function: Vacuoles store materials such as water, salts, proteins, and carbohydrates. They also serve as a containment of waste products, and remove unwanted structural debris.

Chloroplasts
Solar panels
The installed solar panels save the cost of manufacturing by getting free energy from the sunlight. Function: The chloroplasts capture energy in sunlight and convert it into chemical energy in photosynthesis.

Rough ER
Conveyor belt
The conveyor belt transports blown glassware to a particular destination. With this machine, different types of glassware are isolated from each other, like glass bottles from glass containers. Function: The rough ER serves as a protein transport and a sorting pathway. Its is, basically, involved in protein synthesis.

Smooth ER
Machine Coordinator
At the conveyor belt, the coordinator oversees the process and makes sure everything goes smoothly. He helps out if there is any problems. Function: The smooth ER helps make lipids.

Nucleus
Administrative building
The administrative building functions as a command center the directs everyday operations of the company, including the factory. Function: The nucleus contains DNA and controls all of the cells activities.

Nuclear Membrane
Door to administrative building
The door leading into the administrative building only allows related people to come in and out. Function: This is similar to the cell membrane, but it controls what enters and leaves the nucleus instead of the cell itself.

Nucleolus
Purchasing manager
The purchasing manager working in the administrative building is responsible for buying parts of the equipment which is later assembled and works as the molding machine, and many others. Function: The nucleolus is where the assembly of ribosomes begin, when the nucleolus produces parts for the ribosomes that enters the cytoplasm to be assembled as the complete ribosome.

Lysosomes
Crusher and boiler
The crusher and boiler are used to take used glass and produce it into new glass. Function: Old cell organelles are broken down and digested by enzymes released by the lysosomes, and the digested products can be reused again by the rest of the cell in building new cell organelles.

Microtubules
Money and transportation
The money earned by the company help support the expenses needed to run the company and factory. The transportation allows people to move around the large compound. Function: Microtubules help support and shape the cell, and they also play a huge role in movement within a cell.

Cell Wall
Brick wall
The brick wall surrounds the entire compound, and serves as another form of security and protection aside from the locked gates. Function: The cell wall surrounds the cell membrane and it supports and protects the cell.

Questions

1. What is the cell membrane compared to, and why?

2. What is the Golgi Apparatus compared to?

3. What are the fuel and electric supply compared to in a cell?

4. What is the vacuole compared to?

5. What is the function of the organelle that the conveyor belt is compared to?
6. What does the locked gate represent, and what does it do?

Answers

1. The cell membrane is compared to the locked gate guarding the factory compound, and its what it is because the gate allows certain people to enter and leave, just as the membrane controls what goes in and out of the cell. 2. The coloring and packaging center for the glass. 3. The mitochondria.

4. The dumpsite and water storage house.

5. The rough ERs function is to transport proteins and be a sorting pathway. It modifies, sorts, and packages proteins, basically. 6. The cell membrane, and it controls who is allowed to enter the factory compound, and leave.
