Stirling Engine.
Stirling engine is a regenerative thermal machine, which operates on a "closed regenerative thermodynamic cycle, with cyclic compression and expansion of the working fluid at different temperature levels. The flow is controlled by "volume changes", and there is a net conversion of heat work or vice versa.

History

Stirling's air engine was invented by Reverend Dr Robert Stirling and patented by him in 1816.

Main subject of that original patent was a heat exchanger which Stirling called the "economiser" for its enhancement of fuel economy in a variety of applications.
An engine built by Stirling was put to work pumping water in a quarry in 1818. Robert Stirling and his brother James, an engineer successfully improved configuration.

The Stirling Cycle:

Process 1-2: Isothermal expansion 2-3: Constant-volume cooling 3-4: Isothermal compression

4-1: Constant-volume heating

Closed Cycle the working fluid never leaves the system Reversible External heat source any heat source is valid, as long as it produces enough heat to expand the fluid Uses a regenerator to conserve internal energy and increase thermal efficiency.

Types of Stirling Engines:

Two types/configurations Alpha and Beta 1) Alpha Stirling engines use two cylinders and two pistons 2) Beta Stirling engines use one cylinder, one piston and a displacer

Gamma

Project Formulation:

A Stirling Engine of Gamma configuration should generate up to 25 kW during peak performance Fresnel lens should concentrate approximately 100 kW on solar energy on the hot end of the engine Efficient conversion between mechanical energy to electrical energy

STEPS OF WORKING::

WORKING FLUID:

To make the Stirling engine in working condition one thing is to be remembered that working gas is introduced i.e. helium or hydrogen. Due to their expanding behavior the working cycle of stirling engine is achieved.

WORKING DIAGRAM:

APPLICATIONS:

Solar power generation. Stirling cryocoolers. Heat pump. Marine engines. Nuclear power. Automotive engines. Aircraft engines.

Geothermal energy.
Low temperature difference engines.

ADVANTAGES OF STIRLING ENGINES:

1)- It can run directly on any available heat source.
2)- A Stirling engine uses a single-phase working fluid. 3)-Extremely flexible
DISADVANTAGES
