COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This course introduces the basic tools and safety and technical information required by the skilled trades. Topics covered include non-precision and precision measurement tools and methods, layout tools and techniques, hand and bench tools, drills and drilling machines, principles of metal cutting and metal cutting saws, and pedestal grinders. Manufacturing processes are discussed.

COURSE GOALS:
1. To provide the knowledge and skills to become familiar with basic industrial tool operating practices and principles. 2. To provide a foundation of skills and understandings of fundamentals, procedures, and principles relative to shop tools and techniques used in the industrial environment. 3. Develop critical thinking and problem solving skills in identifying specific applications of shop tools relating to use on the job floor.

Upon successful completion of this course, students should be able to: 1. Explain the type, use, and applications of the common basic measuring tools. 2. Explain the type, use, and applications of precision measuring tools. 3. Select, demonstrate, and utilize the basic layout tools and techniques.

GENERAL COURSE REQUIREMENTS:

Calculator Use: Students are encouraged to bring a calculator to all class sessions. Any scientific calculator with a fraction button and a degrees/minutes/seconds button will be sufficient for this course.

COURSE ASSESSMENT:
QUIZZES: Best 6 of 7 accounts for 30% of semester grade. This means the lowest of 7 quizzes will be dropped. There will be no make-ups on missed quizzes. The first quiz missed will be dropped. Any additional missed quizzes will be recorded as a 0 or zero. All quizzes will be administered with closed books and no notes allowed and only during regularly scheduled class periods. ALL QUIZZES WILL COVER THE TWO PREVIOUS SESSIONS

COMPETENCIES: Completed assigned competencies account for 70% of semester grade. Each individual competency will be equal to 1/14th of this grade. Incomplete competencies will be recorded as zero.

ATTENDANCE POLICY:

No excused absences. Maximum allowable number is three (3). The fourth (4th) absence means automatic failure but the class can still be attended.

TARDINESS/LEAVING EARLY:

Tardiness and/or leaving early added up to 60 minutes will be counted as an absence.
