Questionnaire

By Becky Hagger

Questionnaire
This is the questionnaire that we drafted as a group and created to hand out to our target audience. We wanted to obtain useful information from them so we know how to make our video appeal to that particular group of people. We realized that questionnaires are a great way to find a vast amount of information in the easiest way possible.

Question 1: Male of Female? Question 2: What is your favourite genre of music?

We decided to put this question in so we can define the type of people answering our questionnaire and therefore be able to define exactly who were analyzing specifically. This is important so to make our research and music video specific to our target audience ; and by knowing exactly who it is were gaining research from it makes our job a lot easier. We managed to gain 18 responses on our questionnaires. Out of these responses we used only 6. The reason for this is that out of the 18 questionnaires we gave out, none of them said they liked electronica best. So, to still make our research useful we decided to go the next closest genre which was Pop. Pop had 6 responses, 5 of which were female and one which was male. Despite this minor setback, we still feel that we could make this research useful and specific to our audiences. We felt that Pop had similar characteristics to electronica, especially as these genres often cross over and overlap.

Question 3: Do you watch music videos?

4.5 4 3.5 3 2.5 2 1.5 1 0.5 0 Males Females

Watch Don't Watch

From this, we managed to narrow it down to how many of our target audience actually watch music videos and they all said yes, they do apart from one female. This means that 16.6% of our responses would be somewhat unreliable.

Question 5: In your opinion, what is the worst thing to put in a music video?
For this, we decided to take all of the responses into account as the answer to this question can be applied to all different types of genre. However, we decided to disregard some responses as some people replied with an irrelevant answer. From those who actually answered the question properly, we found that the most common themes that people didnt want in their music videos were: 1. Nudity 2. Violence 3. Conflict

This information is incredibly useful because it gives us an idea of what to avoid when creating our video. This will help us to focus on our target audience and make it more appealing to them and their likes.

Question 6: Where do you watch music videos?

Out of the 6 responses that we focused on, 100% of both male & female responses watched music videos on YouTube. We know from our common sense that we cant take this response seriously as not 100% of the population will YouTube, let alone the internet. However, what we can take from this research is that YouTube is a reliable distribution method for the music video and will gain lots of publicity not only for the video but for the track and therefore the artist as well.

Question 7: What is the most important aspect of a music video?

The first thing we need to consider in this question is that only 10 out of the 8 responses from this question were done properly. We asked people to rate the six options 1-6, however some people chose to tick it rather that number it meaning that the research wasnt as reliable as we wanted it to be. We now need to consider a way in which we couldve made this questionnaire easier to complete, or perhaps wording the question easier. Due to this, we only used 10 out of the 18 responses gained (we chose to use all 18 as this wasnt a genre specific question). Out of these 10, 6 were female and 4 were male. From this research there were two clear winners of what was the most important: clear narrative & seeing the artist. Below was the overall result of the answer.

Question 8: The Licket Scale

These are the results from the Licket Scale that we included in our questionnaire. The Licket Scale helped us to find out who our audience liked most in the electronic industry. From this, we can conduct research into these specific artists and find out what theyre defining characteristics are and ask ourselves how theyre so successful among our target audience?

Question 9: Do you like these images. Yes/No? We used images of Prodigy, Lady
Gaga, Fatboy Slim and Rihanna and these were the results we found.
From the light blue yes bar, you can see that Lady Gagas image was most favoured on top of the other three. If we apply Richard Dyers star theory to this we can denote that this is because Lady Gagas image is what makes her sell. In the media, she is not perceived to be a natural woman, she is shown as strange and abnormal, which makes her appealing to her audiences as they like her quirkiness. Dyer says that artists need to have their own USPs and Gaga definitely has this. I think we should attempt this for our own band/artist but not make it as strong as Gaga as from our previous research (question 7) costume & makeup was the least important thing to our audience. Perhaps we should think about the way the artist acts instead therefore were using two of our questions to benefit our coursework.
