THE INCREASING PRESENCE OF TOURISTS IN THE CITY LIFE AND THE STRATEGIC ROLE OF THE LOCAL AIRPORT

The number of tourists in the city of Bergamo is widely increased in recent years thanks to the close presence of an important airport. This airport, the Il Caravaggio Orio al Serio International Airport is the third most important airport in the north of Italy and it covers a significant position both in the national and European airport system.

The distance of the airport from the city center is only about 6 kilometers (3.5 miles) and due to this, tourists can easily have a visit in Bergamo city. The boost in the tourists presence was also given by the decision of a very important European low cost company (RYANAIR) to set Bergamo airport as its second HUB in Europe.

LACK OF INFORMATION ABOUT BERGAMO However, even if the presence of tourists is becoming an important element for Bergamo economy, it has to be signaled the absence of a smart and interactive mean that provides dynamic information about the city. Relevant information could be found on different static web site or on traditional leaflets and paper maps.

Tourists, that desire to obtain information about Bergamo, have to collect pieces on information from different sources and summarize them in function of their necessity.

Question: Is it possible to define something that allows people to have easily dynamic information about the city?

What kind of dynamic information should be provided? (hints) places to visit and how to reach them (navigation system?) free historical information about the principal monument and buildings?

traditional restaurant and tavern?


events and entrainment activities? Everything could be based on the actual position, desire and expectaiton of the specific tourist.

Moreover, another problem is that there is nothing that allows to have tourists feedbacks. This delivered back information could be useful for improving the experience of future tourists in the city. For example having information about what tourists visit and like could be used smartly by local authorities and tourism offices in order to improve already existing services or to create new ones.

Is it possible to create such a piece of smart solution that is able to be a dynamic source of useful information for tourists but also it could be used by authorities in order to improve their knowledge about tourism?
