The Start
California almonds proved to be a difficult crop In 1910, California farmers formed the California Growers Associated Shared farming strategies with each other Realized that planting in valleys proved to be more productive than hillsides.

After World War I, production increased due to a demand for food.

By 1970, Almonds were the largest tree crop in California and the largest food export. Today: Almonds are a 1.5 billion dollar crop and million are invested into researching new harvesting methods.

The Process
Trees are pruned during the winter Trains tree structure Removes dead branches If not taken care of: Becomes breeding ground for insects and pests. Keeps pesticides to a minimum. Spring: Trees Bloom Dead Almonds are removed Trees kept frost free Summer: Nuts start hardening Shells begin splitting

Growers
Blue Diamond is a collection of 230 local farmers in Sacramento. Some families have been a member of the Blue Diamond growers since 1910. Today, California makes up over 80% of the worlds supply of almonds.
