GEOMETRY LESSON 3-3

PARALLEL LINES AND THE TRIANGLE ANGLESUM THEOREM Classify each angle as acute, right, or obtuse.
1. 2. 3.

(For help, go to Lesson 1-4.)

Solve each equation. 4. 30 + 90 + x = 180 6. x + 58 = 90 5. 55 + x + 105 = 180 7. 32 + x = 90

GEOMETRY LESSON 3-3

PARALLEL LINES AND THE TRIANGLE ANGLESUM THEOREM Solutions

1. The measure of the angle is 90, so it is a right angle.

2. The measure of the angle is between 0 and 90, so it is an acute angle.

3. The measure of the angle is between 0 and 90, so it is an acute angle. 4. Combine like terms: 120 + x = 180; subtract 120 from both sides: x = 60 5. Combine like terms: x + 160 = 180; subtract 160 from both sides: x = 20 6. Subtract 58 from both sides: x = 32 7. Subtract 32 from both sides: x = 58

Lesson 3: Parallel Lines and the Triangle Angle-Sum Theorem

OBJECTIVE
Students will Classify triangles and find the measures of their angles. Use the exterior angles of triangles to find other angles of the triangles.

INTRODUCTORY ACTIVITY

GEOMETRY LESSON 3-3

PARALLEL LINES AND THE TRIANGLE ANGLESUM THEOREM

Find m Z.

48 + 67 + m 115 + m m

Z = 180 Z = 180 Z = 65

Triangle Angle-Sum Theorem Simplify. Subtract 115 from each side.

GEOMETRY LESSON 3-3

PARALLEL LINES AND THE TRIANGLE ANGLESUM THEOREM

In triangle ABC, ACB is a right angle, and CD Find the values of a, b, and c. AB.

Find c first, using the fact that

ACB is a right angle.

ACB = 90 c + 70 = 90 c = 20

Definition of right angle Angle Addition Postulate Subtract 70 from each side.

(continued)

To find a, use
a+m

ADC.
Triangle Angle-Sum Theorem Definition of perpendicular lines Substitute 90 for m ADC and 20 for c. Simplify. Subtract 110 from each side. Triangle Angle-Sum Theorem Definition of perpendicular lines Substitute 90 for m Simplify. Subtract 160 from each side. 3-3 CDB.

ADC + c = 180 m ADC = 90 a + 90 + 20 = 180 a + 110 = 180 a = 70

To find b, use CDB. 70 + m CDB + b = 180 m CDB = 90 70 + 90 + b = 180 160 + b = 180 b = 20

GEOMETRY LESSON 3-3

PARALLEL LINES AND THE TRIANGLE ANGLESUM THEOREM

Classify the triangle by its sides and its angles.

The three sides of the triangle have three different lengths, so the triangle is scalene.
One angle has a measure greater than 90, so the triangle is obtuse. The triangle is an obtuse scalene triangle.

Find m 1.

1 + 90 = 125 m 1 = 35

Exterior Angle Theorem Subtract 90 from each side.

Explain what happens to the angle formed by the back of the chair and the armrest as you lower the back of the lounge chair. The exterior angle and the angle formed by the back of the chair and the armrest are adjacent angles, which together form a straight angle. As one measure increases, the other measure decreases. The angle formed by the back of the chair and the armrest increases as you lower the back of the lounge chair.
