DALI in Modern Lighting

Requirements of modern lighting technology

No longer only for switch on and off Provide comfort feel Energy saving Lighting situation (lighting scenes) can be stored and recalled System is easy to operate Feedback message

Classic systems

Analogue 1- 10V control Wiring issue Costly system Extra components needed for light scenes and groups

5 DALI the simple and flexible alternative

Flexible and simple Few low cost component Minimal wiring required Digital Addressable Lighting Interface

6 Where does DALI position themselves?

Comparison of lighting control systems with standard interfaces

7 What is DALI ?
Not a building management bus system (BMS), it is only an interface definition New digital interface for DALI ECG (Electronics Control Gear) / devices Subsystem for controlling lighting in BMS Integrated to BMS through gateway (Bus Coupler)

8 Features of DALI
Data transfer rate of 1200 bps ensure failsafe opearation Potential free control input 2 wire cable, no polarity Up to 64 DALI slave devices per DALI master Dimming curve analogous to the behavior of the eye Addressing option: Broadcast, group or individual Scene memory in DALI slave devices, max 16 scene Programmable dimming time and range (0.1% to 100%) Individual feedback message, e.g. Lamp On/Off, current brightness, DALI slave device status Max distance 300m

9 The DALI connection

10 DALI Master in Standard bus terminal

KL6811 bus terminal in 12mm wide housing with DALI power supply Search addresses during start up DALI/ DSI master configurable Subsystem of common bus system e.g. Ethernet, Profibus, DeviceNet, Canopen and etc Up to 64 DALI slave devices Support max 16 groups Protected input at Bus terminal. Switch off when connect to 230V

16 DALI and Ethernet

Significant growing of Ethernet in Building Automation EtherCAT open up further option for more cost reduction and performance Ideal compliment to Ethernet
Low cost Smple installation Low design effort
