Bangkok Declaration 8 -August, 1967

ASEAN Declaration is the founding document of Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). Signed in Bangkok on August 8, 1967 by the five ASEAN founding members Indonesia, Singapore, Philippines, Malaysia and Thailand

Brunei Darussalam then joined on 7 January 1984, Viet Nam on 28 July 1995, Lao PDR and Myanmar on 23 July 1997, and Cambodia on 30 April 1999, making up what is today the ten Member States of ASEAN. The ASEAN Community is comprised of three pillars, ASEAN Political-Security Community ASEAN Economic Community and ASEAN Social-Cultural Community

Goal Of ASEAN
Its aims include. Accelerating economic growth social progress cultural , Development among its members, Protection of regional peace and stability, and Opportunities for member countries to discuss differences peacefully.

AIMS AND PURPOSES

To accelerate the economic growth, social progress and cultural development in the region through joint endeavors in the spirit of equality and partnership in order to strengthen the foundation for a prosperous and peaceful community of Southeast Asian Nations.
To promote regional peace and stability through abiding respect for justice and the rule of law in the relationship among countries of the region and adherence to the principles of the United Nations Charter To provide assistance to each other in the form of training and research facilities in the educational, professional, technical and administrative spheres

To collaborate more effectively for the greater utilization of their agriculture and industries, the expansion of their trade, including the study of the problems of international commodity trade, the improvement of their transportation and communications facilities and the raising of the living standards of their peoples
To promote active collaboration and mutual assistance on matters of common interest in the economic, social, cultural, technical, scientific and administrative fields To promote Southeast Asian studies

To maintain close and beneficial cooperation with existing international and regional organizations with similar aims and purposes, and explore all avenues for even closer cooperation among themselves.

ASEAN Charter.
On 15 December 2008 the members of ASEAN met in the Indonesian capital of Jakarta to launch a charter, signed in November 2007, with the aim of moving closer. The charter turns ASEAN into a legal entity and aims to create a single free-trade area for the region encompassing 500 million people.

The ASEAN Charter has become a legally binding agreement among the 10 ASEAN Member States. It will also be registered with the Secretariat of the United Nations. The importance of the ASEAN Charter can be seen in the following contexts: New political commitment at the top level New and enhanced commitments New legal framework, legal personality New ASEAN bodies More ASEAN meetings More roles of ASEAN Foreign Ministers New and enhanced role of the Secretary-General of ASEAN Other new initiatives and changes

ASEAN Free Trade AREA Launched in January 1992


To eliminate tariff barriers among the Southeast Asian countries with a view to integrating the ASEAN economies into a single production base and creating a regional market of 500 million people.

The Sixth East Asia Summit (EAS), chaired by H.E. DR. H. Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, President of the Republic of Indonesia, was held on 19 November 2011 in Bali, Indonesia. The Summit was attended by the Heads of State/Government of ASEAN Member States, Australia, the Peoples Republic of China, the Republic of India, Japan, the Republic of Korea, the United States of America. The Foreign Minister of the Russian Federation and the Minister of Foreign Affairs of New Zealand attended the Summit on behalf of their respective Leaders.

In the spirit of "One Vision, One Identity, One Community", the ASEAN Secretariat proudly presents the ASEAN Cultural Show and Exhibition 2012 from 20-22 January at Gandaria City Mall, Jakarta. With the objectives to maintain and preserve the art and culture of ASEAN community, this public event will feature art and culture from 10 ASEAN countries which will be packed into various shows, music performances, and exhibitions.
