Pass Protection
02/21/09 1
Pass Protection
n The system has the capacity to protect
with anything from a 5-man protection
scheme – sending 5 receivers into the
pattern – to an 8-man maximum
protection scheme.
n The base protection is a 6-man scheme
that sends 4 – 5 receivers out on every
pass play.
u We do this without having to use any
sight adjusted hot routes - where the
receiver is required to read the blitz and
change his route.
02/21/09 2
n In the event that there is a seventh
rusher that we cannot account for,
the QB will throw to one of the
built-in hot routes.
n Due to the lack of defenders in
coverage downfield, there is an
excellent chance of gaining big
yardage after the catch.
02/21/09 3
Man or Zone
Protection
n The system can use either; depending
on the linemen’s athletic abilities and the
preference of the line coach.
n The philosophy will remain the same.
u Send 4 – 5 receivers out every pass play,
and be able to block 6 rushers every
play.
n We will pass protect with an aggressive
style much like “quick protection” on all
our protections.
02/21/09 4
Using a Six-man
Pass Protection
n This protection can be used with a man
or zone scheme.
n The back directly behind the center will
block opposite the center (vs. even
fronts) or bock opposite the double
reading guard (vs. odd fronts).
n We will call the other back into the
pattern.
n The center (or QB) will make a “call” at
the L.O.S. to tell the back and the line
which direction to block.
02/21/09 5
Man Protection
n A lineman, a back, or in some
cases both a lineman and a back
must be able to double read
linebackers.
n The guards and the center must
have very good feet in order to
double read linebackers then block
the appropriate defender.
