Who Discovered it, and When?

Mars is one of the brightest planets in the solar system Because of this we are not sure who discovered it We are also unsure as to when Mars was discovered

The Origin of the Name

Mars is named after the Roman God of War Some believe it got this name because its red color Sometimes referred to as the red planet

Size of the Planet

Diameter: 6,974 km Mass: 6.4219e23 kg Mars is the 7th largest planet Density: 3.93 g/cm3

Simple Facts
Mars Day: 24 hrs, 37 min Mars Year: 687 Earth days Gravity: 38% of Earth Atmospheric Pressure: 1% Earths sea level Temperature: Average 68f

Internal Composition
Crust : thick layer of oxidized iron dust and rocks (30 miles) Mantle: primarily silicon, oxygen, iron, and magnesium (900-1,200 miles) Core: composed of iron, nickel, and sulfur (1,8002,400 miles in diameter)

Atmosphere Composition
Carbon dioxide 95.32% Nitrogen 2.7% Argon 1.6% Oxygen 0.13% Carbon monoxide 0.07% Water vapor 0.03% Nitric oxide .0013% Trace gases (krypton, methane, etc)

Rotation and Revolution

Rotation rate: 24 hours, 39 minutes, and 35 seconds Revolution rate: 687 days

Evidence of Water
A rover landed on Mars on August 6th This rover found conglomerate rock This means that water must have flowed there in the past This was the first discovery of water on Mars

Space Missions to Mars

Mars was the first planet that we tried to explore As of right now NASA has two rovers on Mars right now NASA has a plan to try to discover more about the water that they found There have also been many missions to Mars in the past

Evidence of Life
With the finding of water it is possibly there was life on Mars There is no sign of life on Mars today Also a giant crater was discovered which lead scientists to believe there is water in Mars surface

Plate Tectonics
Mars may be the only other planet besides Earth that has plate tectonics It has not been confirmed, but there is some proof of plate tectonics

Fun Facts
Mars has the tallest mountain in the solar system Carbon dioxide makes up 95 percent of the atmosphere Mars experiences violent dust storms which continually change its surface
