The goal of the research was to conceive and design an asymmetrical bucket for older bucket wheel excavators, to compare the performance in the design stage with the existent one. CONSTRAINTS Reuse a series of components and elements of the old bucket in order to obtain a new solution, which can be rapidly implemented and also cost effective. The solution is developed in such a way that allows the transformation, during the refurbishment of classical buckets in asymmetrical buckets with polygonal cutting edge.

METHOD Using the breakout pattern, generated using a CAD modelling software, we compared the behaviour of
the new bucket with the old one from the point of view of the effectiveness. GOAL for the proposed asymmetrical bucket, regardless the swivelling direction, the cross-section of the chip be the same for each tooth for both directions. WHEN the working conditions of the BWE are the same, regardless of the swivelling direction, it leads to reduced teeth, bucket and rotor wear-off, even stresses in the mechanical and electrical systems, reduced energy consumption for cutting, improved BWE stability, lower operational expenses of the excavators and the increase of its lifetime.
