PROBLEMS OF INDIAN TRADE UNION

INTRODUCTION
Indian Trade Union Act, 1926, defined trade union as any combination whether temporary of permanent formed primarily for the purpose of regulating the relations between workmen and employers or between workmen and workmen between employers and employers or for imposing restrictive conditions on the conduct of any trade or business and include any federation of two or more trade unions.

MULTIPLICITY OF UNIONS

Multiple rival unionism is one of the great weaknesses of the Indian trade union movement. Multiple unions are mainly the result of political outsiders wanting to establish unions of their own, with a view to increasing their political influence. The existence of different conflicting or rival organisations, with divergent political views, is greatly responsible for inadequate and unhealthy growth of the movement.

POLITICALISATION

In a democracy political influence of trade unionism can not be avoided. In India, the historical development of trade-union movement was inseparably intermingled with political movement through liberation struggle.

DEMOCRACY AND LEADERSHIP

One of the basic objectives of trade unionism is to promote industrial democracy.


This objective is achieved when trade union is an organization of the workers, for the workers and by the workers.

Poor finances also affects union activities which fails attract more workers to join union.

problem can be tackled by bringing out comprehensive central legislation covering all aspects such as

Recognition, Multiplicity, Outside leadership, etc..

7.Illiteracy & Ignorance


Majority

of Indian labors are illiterate, ignorant & poor. They exploited by unscrupulous trade union leaders which result following problems in TU movement in India:

STEPS TO MAKE UNION EFFECTIVE


Make

one trade union in one industry. Make it compulsory to have internal leadership in union. Keep politics where it belongs. Make democratic election in TU. Enlarge scope of union activities.

of comprehensive central legislation to cover the following:


Avoid multiple trade union Mandatory recognition of union Improve financial position Prevent outside leadership Prevent exploitation of political parties Enlarge role & responsibility of union, etc.
