THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN FINDING MAIN IDEA MASTERY AND READING COMPREHENSION ABILITY OF THE GRADE XI AT SMA NEGERI

1 MUARA SIPONGI IN 2012-2013 ACADEMIC YEAR

CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Problem However, Indonesian students often encounter difficulties when trying to read an English is a foreign language in Inodonesia. This problem may create further difficulties for Indonesian students in their future, since English is the international language of knowledge in the globalization era. Reading English text requires rhem to have an adequate knowledge of the langeage and certain set of skills.

1.2 The Identification of the Problem Some related factors identified are mostly derived from the students them selves, as learners factors, including their finding main idea mastery, their motivations to study, their attitude and interest in studying the reading, as well as their background knowledge related to the reading materials provided for them in the learning process.

1.3 The Limitation of the Problem The problem is stated above are taken only one item from the learning factors, thus, the students finding main idea mastery is the more influenced factor. 1.4 The Formulation of the Problem In order to know what should be done in the research, the formulation of this study are :

1. To what extent is the finding main idea mastery of the XI Grade Students of SMA Negeri 1 Muara Sipongi in 2012-2013 Academic Year? 2. To what extent is the students reading comprehension of the XI Grade Students of SMA Negeri 1 Muara Sipongi in 2012-2013 Academic Year? 3. Is there a significant correlation between finding main idea mastery and reading comprehension of the XI Grade Students of SMA Negeri 1 Muara Sipongi in 2012-2013 Academic Year?

1.5 The Objectives and the Significances of the Research 1.5.1 The Aims of the Research 1. Related to the formulation of the problem that is discussed above, so that, the aims of this study are to investigate: 2. The extent iof the students finding main idea mastery of the XI Grade Students of SMA Negeri 1 Muara Sipongi in 2012-2013 Academic Year? 3. Tehe extent students reading comprehension of the XI Grade Students of SMA Negeri 1 Muara Sipongi in 2012-2013 Academic Year? 4. The extent there is the significant correlation between the students finding main idea mastery and reading comperehension of the XI Grade Students of SMA Negeri 1 Muara Sipongi in 2012-2013 Academic Year?

1.5.2 The Uses of the Research


The study is expected to have both theoritical and practical contributions, they are : 1. Theoretically, this study is expected; First, to increase the Grade XI Students of SMA Negeri 1 Muara Sipongi in reading comprehension. Second, to add the knowledge of the researcher, to enrich researcher ability in mastering English generally. Third, to improve capability of the English teacher in teaching reading comprehension. Finally, as the information for the headmaster to up grade reading comprehension through improving students finding main idea mastery. 2. Practically, it can be used as a model to improve the students reading comprehension. Through finding main idea mastery it may be guide, help, and encourage students ability in reading comprehension.

CHAPTER II THEORETICAL DESCRIPTON AND HYPOTESIS 2.1 The nature of reading One of the defenition is by Grabe and Stoller (2001:9) which define reading is the ability to draw meaning from prinetdd page and to interpret the information appropriately.

2.2 The nature of finding main idea mastery Main idea is the basic point of discussion in the paragraph. A paragraph usually only own one topic or main idea. According to Peha (2011:45) the main idea is a single sentence that sums everything up and express the one most important thing you want your readers to know. It means that main idea should be something that is important to you and that you think will be important to your readers as well.

2.3 Hypothesis The writer makes a hypothesis in this research. It is There is significant correlation between finding main idea mastery and reading comprehension ability of the Grade XI at SMA Negeri 1 Muara Sipongi in 2012-2013 Academic Year.

CHAPTER III METHODOLOGY OF THE RESEARCH

3.1 The Location and the Time of the Research In getting the data and the information needed in this research, the writer choose SMA Negeri 2 Muara Sipongi as the location of this research. The process of the research was conducted for three months (October, November and December 2012).

3.2 Method of the Research The method of this research is descriptive method because this research is about the correlation between the both variables, X and Y. The variables of this research are finding main idea mastery as variable X and reading comprehension as variable Y. 3.3 The Population and Sample
a. Population Based on the quotation previously, the population is taken from all students XI Grade of SMA Negeri 1 Muara Sipongi. They are consist of in five classes, they are; XI IPA1, XI IPA2, XI IPA3, XI IPS1, and XI IPS2.

b. Sample Based on the opinion above, so become the group of population is class parallel there are in 1 class, they are five classes. With used technique cluster sampling so become research is XI IPA2, which total students are 44.

3.4 The Instrument of the Research


In measuring the students in reading and in finding main idea, the writer take the indicator of the test this variable.

To know the criteria of the score for the students reading comprehension, the writer writes the criteria as follows:

3.4.1 The Technique of Collecting Data


The data these two variables is arranged in instrument to make two sets of the test. The data were collected by giving instrument. The questioners consist of some questions which are related to the variables. They are 20 items each variable those were answered on sheet.
