What is haptics?
Interfaces which allows the users to interact with the computers with the help of their sense of touch in a virtual environment.
Out of five human senses Sight, Sound, Smell, Touch and Taste- Sight, Sound and Touch convey the most information about an environment
Tactile Information
Conveys the texture or roughness of the object the we are touching via mechanoreceptor cells located near the surface of the skin, highest density found in the hand Also conveys the Temperature of the object touched. Involves high frequency(about 300Hz) buzzing sensations applied directly to the skin
Kinesthetic Information
Related to sensing of forces Conveys the coarse properties, such as it's position in space, and whether the surfaces are deformable or springlike to touch. Achieved by receptors situated in muscles, tendons and joints Stimulus frequency is much lower, lying in the 0-10 Hz range
Increases the information flow between the computer and the user. Our sensing of forces is closely tied to our visual system and sense of three-dimensional space Information and intent can be conveyed in a physically direct and primal way
PHANToM (Personal Haptic Interface Mechanism) Developed by J K Salisbury and Thomas Massie of SensAble Technologies Inc. An interface that lets you feel virtual objects with a finger tip.
like a small desk lamp and has a stylus grip or fingertip thimble which provides force feedback between virtual objects and the user.
