WHAT IS GREEN MANUFACTURING

Method for manufacturing that minimizes waste and pollution achieved throughout the product life cycle.

Also knows as: Sustainable manufacturing Clean manufacturing primary goal remains the same - designing and delivering products that minimize negative effects on the environment

FUNDAMENTAL STRUCTURE OF GREEN MFG.

DRIVERS OF GREEN MFG

There are many drivers which are expanding the boundaries for green manufacturing. Manufacturers responsibilities Competitiveness Legislation Companys Benefits

MANUFACTURERS RESPONSIBILITIES
Reduce release of pollutants

Reduce consumption of energy

Reduce waste related to mgf. Processes Development of product with small environmental impact Optimize process: Material reduction Water saving Recycling Develop advanced technologies Techno social responsibilities

MANUFACTURING STRATEGIES
JIT manufacturing Zero emission strategy Substitute power for petroleum Casting from recycled material Non conventional production processes Clean Tech practices

GREEN MARKETING
Navneet Publications (India) Ltd. have been consistently taking up genuine efforts to increase the green cover
To overcome the problem of shortage of raw materials by promoting new eco friendly alternatives in its product portfolio which ensures no damage to the environment. Launched a complete range of premium stationery products under the brand name FfUuNn across India.

LEGISLATION
Manufacturing firms have to constantly strive to meet current and upcoming stricter environmental regulations. WEEE: Waste Electrical & Electronic Equipment RoHS: Restriction of Hazardous Substances EVL: End of Life Vehicle ISO: International Organization for Standardization

The European Parliament is tightening up on electronic waste policies, adding new pieces of legislation to the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) directive.

End of Life Vehicle:

Every year, motor vehicles which have reached the end of their useful lives create between 8 and 9 million tonnes of waste in the European Union

ISO 14000 is a family of standards related to environmental management that exists to help organizations

The Centre for Environmental Law (CEL):

COMPANYS BENEFITS
A company is said to have a social responsibility and this reputation means lot to a company A green image of a company Reduction in wastes and raw material

Long term investment

Spins of research and development Government funding for new technologies Recycling

OVERVIEW OF DRIVERS OF GREEN MANUFACTURING

CHALLENGES:
Investment Increase in Production cost Research cost Lack of availability and information

CONCLUSION:
The change to green manufacturing will not happen overnight but over time. However we do expect a tipping point after which adoption will be very rapid, when it moves beyond a continuous improvement approach. But Industry by itself cannot bring about this change. Government has to play a very important role of creating the right environment in which adopters of green manufacturing do not lose competitive edge in the short term.
