Everyone has dreams.

We are going to look at the


dreams of Martin Luther King
and Cassie.
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

• Martin Luther King Jr. was a


famous civil rights activist.
This means that he fought
for black people to have
the same equal rights as
white people.

• Martin Luther King Jr. and


his supporters gathered all
around the country for
different types of
demonstrations.

• These meetings were


meant to be peaceful, but
they often resulted in
violence, due to the
situation of our country at
that time.
MLK’s Speeches
• At civil rights
demonstrations, MLK
(Martin Luther King)
motivated many people by
giving speeches.
• His most well known
speech was given on
August 28, 1963 at the
Lincoln Memorial in
Washington, D.C. It is
called “I Have a Dream”.

“Tar Beach”
• Cassie is the main
character in the book “Tar
Beach” by Faith Ringgold.

• In the story, she faces


many problems that are
similar to those of Martin
Luther King Jr.

in NYC. The setting is just
after the time of MLK’s

• After reading “Tar Beach”
alone, you need to get back
into your groups.
