3. General Rules
Huawei

This Specification is applicable to the lightning protection earthing design and engineering installation of the broadband multi-service switch and access equipment developed by Huawei. The lightning protection/ earthing design and engineering installation of this equipment should ensure personal safety as well as the safety and normal operation of the communication equipment. Special requirements, if any, should be met according to relevant current standards in the countries concerned.

4. General Earthing Principles 1

Huawei

The earthing design of the communication office (station) should follow the principle of equalized voltage. That is, the joint earthing mode should be adopted in which the working earth and protection earth (including the shielded earth and lightning protection earth of the cable distribution frame) share one group of earthing electrodes. The normal neutral metal parts of the equipment and accessories should have protection earth. The protection earthing wire should be yellow/green interwoven and insulated by plastic . Copper wires should be adopted as the earthing wires to reduce the high frequency impedance. The earthing wires should be as short and thick as possible. They should not be made of aluminum. The connecting points at the two ends of the earthing wire should be in reliable electric contact. When bolts are adopted for connection, block nuts or lock washers should be installed with appropriate anticorrosion and rustproof measures adopted.

4. General Earthing Principles 2

Huawei

The earthing lead should not be entangled with or parallel to signal lines. Aerial laying of earthing wire from outdoor to indoor is strictly prohibited. It should be buried underground or laid indoor. It is strictly prohibited to install connectors, switches or fuses in protection earthing wires. The protection earthing wire should not be longer than 30m and should be as short as possible. When it is longer than 30m, a new earthing bar should be set nearby. The two ends of the external conductor of the coaxial cable as well as the two ends of the shielded layer of the shielded cables should be in good electric contact with the outer surface of the metal shell of the connected equipment. Besides, it should be possible to disconnect the transmitting end from the earth. The diameter of the earthing cable should conform to relevant standards or in compliance with the requirements specified in this document.

Besides, the enforcing metal wires inside the fibers should be connected to the nearby earthing bolt of the cabinet at the entrance to the cabinet.

29

7. Earthing Resistance
Huawei

The earthing mode and earthing resistance should be determined with reference to relevant local standards.

Suggestions: If the broadband equipment is installed in a central office, the earthing resistance should be less than 1 . If the broadband equipment is installed in a remote office, the earthing resistance should be less than 5 .

30

8. Selecting Protection Earthing Wire

Huawei

The major factor to be considered for selecting the sectional area of the protection earthing wire of the equipment is the work current of the equipment. Lightning protection requirement: Lightning protection is major criterion for selecting earthing wire. The sectional area of the earthing wire should meet the requirement for the lightning current to safely pass the discharge earth of the earthing wire. Generally this requirement is easy to meet. Anti-external force requirement: If the protection earthing wire is introduced outside from the equipment, the wire should not be broken due to accidental collision with human body or other objects.
