Edition 2.0 2009 OH 41

Turn to increase

1.2.4D Light Tanker Isuzu NPS300 (4x4)

Session 2:

Diesel Particulate Diffuser (DPD)

The DPD is an after treatment device (like an additional muffler in the exhaust system) that dramatically reduces Particulate Matter (PM)
The DPD system purifies the carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrocarbons (HC) discharged from the exhaust and captures PM in a filter The accumulation of PM is monitored by the engines Electric Control Module (ECM)
Edition 2.0 2009 OH 42 1.2.4D Light Tanker Isuzu NPS300 (4x4)

Session 2:

Automatic Regeneration
The ECM automatically initiates the DPD regeneration process which burns the accumulated PM during a 3 to 30 minute cycle depending on the internal DPD filter temperature at the start of the process The driver is notified that DPD regeneration is in progress by a green lamp on the dash

Edition 2.0 2009 OH 43

1.2.4D Light Tanker Isuzu NPS300 (4x4)

Session 2:

Manual Regeneration
If the automatic regeneration process does not occur as a result of abnormal driving conditions, the driver is notified by a slow flashing orange lamp on the dash
This means the manual regeneration process is required at your earliest convenience

Edition 2.0 2009 OH 44

1.2.4D Light Tanker Isuzu NPS300 (4x4)

Session 2:

Manual Regeneration
To activate a manual regeneration process:
Pull over in a safe place, apply the hand brake and leave the tanker idling in neutral Press the DPD switch (mounted on the dash) and wait for around 20 minutes.

The orange lamp on the dash glows steadily and is extinguished when the regeneration process has finished. Then the tanker can be driven normally.

Edition 2.0 2009 OH 45

1.2.4D Light Tanker Isuzu NPS300 (4x4)

Session 2:

Manual Regeneration
If the slow flashing orange lamp is ignored it flashes faster indicating that you are urgently required to perform the manual regeneration process

Edition 2.0 2009 OH 46

1.2.4D Light Tanker Isuzu NPS300 (4x4)

Session 2:

Manual Regeneration
If the fast flashing orange lamp is ignored, then excessive accumulation of PM will eventually clog the filter and compromise its operation to reduce emissions As a result the Engine Control Unit will de-rate the engine to limp mode to reduce the amount of emissions it can produce and to protect the DPD from permanent and expensive damage Limp mode effectively means that only 40-50% of the engines power can be used. That is, your maximum driving speed would be reduced to somewhere around 40km/h

Edition 2.0 2009 OH 47

1.2.4D Light Tanker Isuzu NPS300 (4x4)

Session 2:

Manual Regeneration
The only way to retain full engine power (remove it from limp mode) is to have the truck returned to an Isuzu dealer (on a flat bed tray) so that they can physically pull apart the DPD, clean it and reset the ECM
The manual regeneration process can be interrupted if the tanker must be moved

Edition 2.0 2009 OH 48

1.2.4D Light Tanker Isuzu NPS300 (4x4)

Session 2:

What does it mean for CFA?

During normal driving, the automatic regeneration process will occur However there is the potential that during low speed, long engine idle periods that a manual regeneration process will be required. If a manual regeneration process is required during fire fighting operations, the tanker shall be removed from the fire ground and the manual regeneration process activated

Edition 2.0 2009 OH 49

1.2.4D Light Tanker Isuzu NPS300 (4x4)

Session 2:

Recommended CFA Practice

To help mitigate the need to do a manual regeneration process on the fire ground, after each shift at the staging area, and with the engine at normal operating temperature, the driver shall try to perform a manual regeneration. Each time the vehicle is put away, or once per week (whichever occurs first), and with the engine at normal operating temperature, the driver shall try to perform a manual regeneration. The engine ECM will only allow a manual regeneration to occur if there is sufficient restriction through the DPD, and therefore may not occur each time it is attempted.
Edition 2.0 2009 OH 50 1.2.4D Light Tanker Isuzu NPS300 (4x4)

Session 2:

Recommended CFA Practice

If a manual regeneration commences, someone is required to stay with the vehicle until the manual regeneration process has completed (approximately 30 minutes) before the engine is shut down. When an auto regeneration process commences whilst driving, you can still continue to drive the vehicle, but the auto regeneration process must be allowed to be completed before the engine is shut down .

Foam Concentrate
Foam concentrate is stored in 2 x 20 litre carboys A single foam pick-up tube is connected to the carboy and supplies foam concentrate to the proportioning valve
Note: If the carboy lid is not a vented type, the lid must be unscrewed approx to 1 turn to allow air to enter the carboy. Failure to loosen the lid will result in a negative pressure forming in the container resulting in reduced concentrate flow to the proportioner

Session 2:

Tank Fill Valve

During foam production, the tank fill / recirculation valve must remain closed
In the event that this valve is opened during foam production, contamination of the water tank will result

Edition 2.0 2009 OH 85

1.2.4D Light Tanker Isuzu NPS300 (4x4)

Session 2:

Pump Cooling
When the Class A foam valve is in the On position water being used by the branches provides cooling for the pump by providing a flow of water through the pump. During foam production, if branches are turned off, water stops flowing through the pump and as a result the pump may overheat. Note: When foam is being produced, branches should not be shut off for more than five minutes while the pump is operating. Damage to the pump seal is likely to occur after this time due to an increase of water temperature in the pump.
