A Background on Gabriella

Gabriela 101
Gabriela was founded in the year 1984. It was

named after the famous Gabriela Silang. It was established as a coalition of 42 women's organizations.

Among other things, the coalition has a

political wing, named Gabriela Women's Party. It was founded on October 28, 2000.

Since this is an ideology class, and inevitably we

knew you'd ask about it anyway, we include, in the next slide, some of the principles of that the electoral wing of Gabriela believe in.

Principles

Women have the right to a society where all forms of discrimination and violence against women have been banished Women have the right equal to men to the land they work on; as well as the right to full and gainful employment and living wages Women have the right to participate freely in all aspects of political debates, action, and decisionmaking processes in the family, the community and the nation at large; as well as the right to fair and nonsexist representation in all social, political, economic and cultural spheres

Principles

Women have the right to fight for basic health care and services for all, especially reproductive and maternal health care Women have the right to a marriage founded on mutual consent and respect, with equality and dignity, and to adequate support for the rearing and caring of children Women have the right to fight for childrens basic needs like proper care, nutrition, health, safety and play, protection from abuse and exploitation; access to a national, scientific and mass education which is nonsexist as well

Principles

Women have the right to advocate for lesbian and gay rights and to insist that society not discriminate on the basis of sexual preference Women have the right to assert and protect their countrys sovereignty and national patrimony Women have the right to a foreign policy that is independent and beneficial to our economy and security as a nation Women have the right to a government that is truly democratic and representative of the majority.

Gabriela Youth
GABRIELA Youth is a national organization of women students

from various colleges and universities. Founded in 1994, the organization is the youth arm of GABRIELA, national alliance of women's organizations in the Philippines. With the aim of instilling awareness among students on women's rights and their significant role in the nation's struggle for genuine freedom and democracy. GABRIELA Youth launches campaigns and other activities to uphold the democratic rights of women in and outside the campus. it calls on students, women in particular, to go beyond the confines of their classrooms and claim their place in the Filipino women's struggle for liberation.

Objectives of Gabriela Youth


To instill awareness among students about

women rights and their significant role in the nation's struggle for genuine freedom and democracy.
It calls on students, women in particular, to go

So, why, you might ask, did we include these two other groups within Gabriela in our report? It's simple. In order to at least have a backing for our decision whether we consider Gabriela in its entirety as feminist, we want to see first, what principles do they profess to possess. Second, what action do they undertake to proves this. Lastly, how a member organization of the coalition actually views Gabriela.
