Licensing Overview

StoreGrid Service Provider Edition

What is an SPEU?
Understanding the Licensing Currency: SPEUs

• SPEU is short for Service Provider edition Unit. An SPEU is like a coupon.

• Partners using the SP Edition to offer backup services will first need to purchase
SPEUs

• Purchased SPEUs will be credited to the partner’s ‘account’ at the Vembu StoreGrid
Partner Zone and partners can use their SPEU balance to issue licenses as required

• Links:
– SPEU purchase page & SPEU calculator ; you will need the Partner Access Code (PAC)
Click here if you haven’t got the Partner Access Code (PAC) yet.

– Partner Zone (you will be given a Partner ID & password after your first SPEU purchase)
(we use a private certificate on this page; your browser may throw up a security warning; you
can safely ignore this warning and accept the certificate)
What do SPEUs do?

1. A StoreGrid installation on a Desktop OS needs 1 SPEU to license it for 1 year

(inclusive of all updates, upgrades, bug fixes, etc).

– Desktop OS are: Windows 2000, XP, Vista & Mac OS X.

2. A StoreGrid installation on a Server OS needs 2 SPEUs to license it for 1 year

(inclusive of all updates, upgrades, bug fixes, etc).

– Server OS are: Windows 2000 Server, 2003 Server, Small Business Server,
Linux, FreeBSD.

3. Irrespective of which operating system it is running on, a Replication Server needs 2

SPEUs to license it for 1 year (inclusive of all updates, upgrades, bug fixes, etc)

4. The Advanced Plugin for SQL / Exchange requires 1 extra SPEU. Hence, for example,
a Windows Server 2003 machine with advanced SQL & Exchange backup functionality
will require 3 SPEUs to license it for 1 year. The Basic Plugin supporting
SQL+Exchange Backups continues to be available at no extra charge.

The A, B, C of licensing

3 easy steps…
Step A : Get SPEUs !
• Purchase SPEUs from
1 http://www.vembu.com/storegrid/storegrid-pricing.html

Enter the Partner Access Code (

click here if you haven’t got the code)
The purchase page includes a calculator
to help you assess your requirements.
• Your account at the Partner Zone will
be credited with the purchased SPEUs (if
this is your first SPEU purchase, we will
create your account and send you the
2 details within 1 business day)
3. For example, if you’d purchased 50
SPEUs, your account will display 50
SPEUs
• You can license your backup server,
replication server and clients by utilizing
these SPEUs
3
• When your account is running low on
SPEUs, simply buy some more and credit
your account accordingly
Step B : License the Backup Server
Backup
Server
• On the StoreGrid
WebConsole of the Backup
Server, go to
Clients 1 Server Admin  License
Management
Clients Clients and click on
“Apply License Key to
Server”

• Apply the annual license

key. You can issue your
own key from the Partner
Zone
2
Your backup server is now
licensed for 1 year (with
probably a week’s grace
period)
All client licensing is managed from the backup
server, for example:

MSPEU?

Please do go through this section!

Amongst other things, it will help answer questions like

“What if my client discontinues?”

“What if he changes OS?”
etc
What are MSPEUs?

• MSPEU = Monthly SPEU

• 1 SPEU = 12 MSPEUs
(because there are 12 months in a year  )

• StoreGrid’s working currency is still SPEUs

– Licenses for clients are now added to the server as MSPEUs, ie
required SPEUs x 12

• Why one more currency ?

Why MSPEUs ?

• MSPEUs were introduced to allow easier license management,

especially when:
a) a client changes his operating system (from Desktop OS to Server
OS or vice versa)
b) A client discontinues service for one of his installations midway
through the year and you wish to reuse the remaining credit on
other clients.

• The backup server holds a 'bank' of MSPEUs and as clients

connect to the backup server they use up MSPEUs from the
server's bank - on a monthly basis. MSPEUs ensure that as long
as your server has enough MSPEUs on it, you needn't spend time
and effort worrying about client licensing.
Nothing’s really changed!

• A StoreGrid client running on a Desktop OS needs 12 MSPEUs (that's 1

SPEU) every year.
• A StoreGrid client running on a Server OS needs 24 MSPEUs (that's 2
SPEUs) every year.
• Clients using the 'advanced exchange & SQL plugin' will use 12 additional
MSPEUs (that's 1 SPEU) every year.
• For Example: A licensed backup server holding 120 MSPEUs (which is, in
effect, 10 SPEUs) can deploy clients in any one of the following
configurations:
a) 10 Desktop OS clients for 12 months
b) 5 Server OS clients for 12 months
c) 6 Desktop OS clients & 2 Server OS clients for 12 months
d) 3 Desktop OS clients & 3 Server OS clients with 1 advanced exchange/SQL
pug-in for 12 months

Let’s see how

MSPEUs are
added…
Step C : Add Client Licenses (MSPEU
Licenses) to the Backup Server
• Go to
Backup Server Admin  License
Server
Management

Clients 1
• Click on the “Add MSPEUs”
Clients Clients
button

5. Apply the MSPEU license key

(it’s like filling up your server’s
tank). You can issue your key by
yourself from your Partner Zone
2 account

3
Licensing in action: An Example

Assumptions:

3. You have 50 SPEUs in your Partner Zone account

4. You’re backing up 6 clients (for starters) to your backup server
5. You will replicate your backup server to a replication server
6. The operating systems in use are as detailed in the diagram…
Any Licensing in Action

Server
• Use 2 SPEUs to generate an annual
license key for the Replication
server; apply this key on the
Backup
Server replication server
(SPEU balance is 48)
Linux
• Use 2 SPEUs to generate an annual
license key for the Backup server;
Clients apply this key on the backup server
WinX WinX (SPEU balance is 46)

3. Use the intuitive calculators in your
Linux MacO Partner Zone account to correctly
SX estimate SPEU requirements for
Clients Clients your clients. For the 6 clients in this
Win2003 example…
Win2003
Server Server
(plus Advanced
SQL+Exchange
Licensing in Action
1. The sample configuration has the
following clients:
• 3 x Desktop OS (Mac, Win XP)
• 3 x Server OS (Win Server, Linux)
• 1 x Advanced SQL+Exchange Plugin
 This will require 10 SPEUs

2. 10 SPEUs = 120 MSPEUs

• This is what you will add to your backup
server: a 120 MSPEU key

3. When you have additional client

requirements, simply generate
additional MSPEU keys and keep adding
them to your backup server(s) to
continue offering uninterrupted backup
services!

MSPEUs licenses are generated in the name of the backup server to which they are added…
That’s It !
Thanks for taking the time
to understand StoreGrid

Happy Backing Up.
