Adverbs comes from word add and verb, so it means adding the meaning of verb. Adverbs are words that modify a verb, an adjective and another adverb.

Classified by meaning 1. Manner -- quickly, slowly, well, etc. 2. Place and Direction (here, there, everywhere, upstair / downstair, up, down, away, in, out, etc) 3. Time Definite time (yesterday, tomorrow, etc.) Indefinite time (recently, soon, already, etc.) 4. Intensifying Adverbs Adverbs of Degree (very, too, quite, etc) Distinguishing Adverbs (especially, exactly, etc.)

Classified by Function
1. Sentence Adverbs -- Fortunately, actually, etc.
2. Conjunctive Adverbs -- Besides, Furthermore, etc. 3. Explanatory Adverbs -- namely, for example, as, etc. 4. Relative, Interrogative Adverbs -- Where, When, Why.

Inflectional Adverbs

The adverb has an inflectional form only for comparison. Short adverbs (mostly one-syllable adverbs) that have the same form as adjectives are compared by the addition of er, -est.
Derivational Adverbs

Most adverbs of manner, many sentence adverbs, and some adverbs of frequency and degree are formed by adding the derivational suffix ly to a descriptive adjective.

Functions of Adverb
Adverb as modifier of a verb. 2. Adverb as modifier (intensifier) of an adjective or an adverb. 3. Adverb as modifier of an entire sentence.

Initial position (before the subject) Ex: Sometimes she comes late. 2. Mid-position (position of close modification of the verb) Ex: She sometimes comes late. 3. Final position (after the verb plus object or other complement) Ex: She comes late sometimes.

Punctuation of Adverbials
1. Adverbials in Initial Position e.g. Obviously, Mr. Jones doesnt care to work very hard. 2. Adverbials in Final Position e.g. Well meet you at the airport the day after tomorrow. The occasional sentence adverbs or conjunctive adverbs that appear in final position are usually cut off by commas. e.g. Mr. Jones doesnt care to work very hard, obviously Its raining very hard; the club will cancel the picnic, therefore. 3. Adverbials in Mid-position e.g. Mr. Jones, obviously, doesnt care to work hard. The shipment, unfortunately, has been delayed because of a dock strike.
