INTRODUCTION
Internet + Every one having a PC, Interact
+ + with the world called Internet Miracle!! Uses telephone lines laid down between a telephone set and a telephone office Disadvantages - phone busy - huge downloading time

DSL Technology is solution

B.E. Computer Seminar

Digital Subscriber Line

Enables to use the unused bandwidth in a regular phone line Uses to deliver a high speed, downstream and low speed, upstream Increase the information-carrying ability of copper wires Enables high speed multimedia services Can download data up to 1.5 Mbps and 512 Kbps upstream

How Does DSL Works ?

Allows greater bandwidth DSL modems provide - downlink speed > 6 mbps - uplink speed of 640 kbps - faster than ISDN Geographic requirements - end user within 18,000ft of central office

DSL Equipment
DSL Transceiver - DSL modem or ATU-R - most residential installation uses USB or 10 base-T - devices used by business may combine n/w routers, n/w switches DSLAM - takes connection from many customers and aggregates them onto a single, high capacity connection to the internet - Support multiple types of DSL in a single central office

xDSL TECHNOLOGY
Introduction To xDSL Technology - generic abbreviation for many flavors of DSL - speed depends on * equipment used, * distances involved, * cabling quality, * encoding techniques, * frequency spectrum available Various Types Of xDSL

B.E. Computer Seminar

xDSL TECHNOLOGY
Various Types Of xDSL

- ADSL : * Popular , asymmetric B.W. * Downstream speed 768kbps to 9Mbps * Upstream speed 64kbps to 1.5Mbps
- CDSL: * Proprietary technology * Trademark by Rockwell International - HDSL: * Provide Full-duplex symmetric D.C. * Uses PAM on a 4-wire loop.

B.E. Computer Seminar

xDSL TECHNOLOGY
Various Types of xDSL - HDSL2 : * Uses OPTIS ( Overlapped phase Trellis-code Interlocked Spectrum) - IDSL : * ISDN based DSL * uses 2B1Q line coding * supports data transfer rate of 128 kbps

B.E. Computer Seminar

xDSL TECHNOLOGY
Various Types of xDSL - RADSL : * uses CAP and PM * uplink rate depends on the downlink rate - SDSL : * 2-wire implementation of HDSL * supports T1/E1 on a single pair to a distance of 11,000 ft.

ASYMMETRIC DIGITAL SUBSCRIBER LINE

Physical layer transmission protocol (new modem technology) Converts existing twisted-pair telephone lines into access paths for multimedia and high speed data communications

B.E. Computer Seminar

ADSL Capabilities
Creates 3 information channels + a high speed downstream channel - ranges from 1.5 to 6.1 Mbps + a medium speed duplex channel - ranges from 16 to 640 Kbps + basic telephone service channel - split off from digital modem by filters

B.E. Computer Seminar

ADSL Technology
4 KHz region at the DC end of the band is split off for POTS FDM assigns separate bands for upstream and downstream data; downstream path is divided by TDM into several channels In echo cancellation, upstream and downstream bands overlap (same technique as V.34 modems)
September 8th, 2003 Marathe Tushar P. 12/ 21

B.E. Computer Seminar

ADSL Advantages
Advantages Less costly than fiber alternatives - Always on connectivity more convenient, enables remote office - Quality of connectivity is increased, enables new applications such as videoconferencing

Very-High-Data-Rate DSL

Transmits high-speed data over short reaches of twisted pair copper telephone lines Provides - downstream speed 51 to 55 Mbps over lines upto 1000 ft - downstream speed < 13 Mbps over lengths beyond 4000 ft - upstream speed from 1.6 to 2.3 Mbps
September 8th, 2003 Marathe Tushar P. 14/ 21

B.E. Computer Seminar

VDSL Technology
Line Code Candidates 4 line codes + CAP , DMT, DWMT, SLC
Channel Separation - normally downstream channel locate above upstream channel - use FDM to separate

VDSLs Relationship with ADSL

Data rates => VDSL > 10 * (ADSL) ADSL must contend with much larger dynamic ranges than VDSL ADSL employs data rates from 1.5 to 9 Mbps while VDSL 13 to 55 Mbps ADSL employs ranging to 18,000 ft while VDSL 4,500 ft VDSL suitable for a full-service n/w but ADSL may not be a full-service technology

CONCLUSION
Advantages - provide wide range frequency band - speed achieved is very high - does not require new wiring Disadvantages - closer to the providers central office - faster for receiving but slower in sending - service not available elsewhere
