Types of Ships

There are two main types of dry cargo: bulk Cargo and Break bulk cargo The shipping industry is global in scale and it reflects the economic health of nations and the world as a whole.

Sizes of Containers
Container shipping uses standard sized containers of 20 foot (6.09 meters), 40 foot (12.18 meters), 45 foot (14.6 meters) and 53 foot (16.15 meters). TEU is twenty-foot equivalent unit, which is the standard measure. Containers are built to international standard making them interchangeable between shipping companies, rail and truck companies. Shipping containers are usually made of steel, but other materials like aluminum, fiberglass or plywood are also used. They are designed to be entirely transferred to and from trains, trucks or trailers. There are several types of containers and they are categorized according to their size and functions.
The shipping sector in India shapes Indias economy to a large extent. The Indian shipping sector is growing in leaps and bounds and metamorphosing from a traditional way of business to attract lucrative business opportunities. the average age of container ships worldwide was 10.6 years, making them the youngest general vessel type, followed by bulk carrier at 16.6 years, oil tankers at 17 years, general cargo ships at 24.6 years, and others at 25.3 years The act of hiring a ship to carry cargo is called chartering

What a Seaspan recruiter need to do


Find out the desired resumes from the available social networking sites and job portals. Analyze these resumes by keeping in mind the qualification requirements. Always remember that when you are on a call with a candidate, you should be polite and gentle. While calling first introduce yourself gently and then introduce your organization and offer them the post that are open in Seaspan. If they are available and meet the eligibility criteria then forward them the application form of Seaspan so as to get their details.

Once you receive the application form from the candidate, forward it to the Seaspans Bombay office
If Seaspan find the candidate suitable then they will process his candidature further. In an industry like Shipping, we need to build long term relations with the sea farers . So try to keep in touch with every candidate and a keep a record of everyone.

NOTE : Do not entertain any candidate of Panamian COC or CDC

Candidate should be in possession of U.S visa. For reference please review the previous slides and all the tables

When the candidate wants a relaxation in his contract Generally Seaspan doesn't entertain such candidates but if you find a really good candidate with this issue then just tell him that we can refer your candidature to the Seaspan office in Bombay and if the Supridendent can consider your plea then we can offer you a shorter contract.

When some candidates have issue of wages Enquire about his last drawn salary and see what Seaspan is offering to him. Calculate the difference and keep a record of it. Forward these details monthly to Seaspan office so that they can put this difference across its management.

When you find a candidate already employed by Seaspan Do not call them. Maintain their record for reference.

When a candidate is on sailing

Ask them when their contract is ending and if they are interested in joining Seaspan then just write down their details and prepare their follow up. When the candidate enquire about the crew Tell them that we have a mixed crew of Indians, Sri Lankans and Filipinos. When the candidate enquire about the Sea route North Atlantic Ocean( North American Waters ) via Red Sea If a candidate is concerned about his safety from a Pirate attack Tell them that there has not been any Pirate attack till now; Practicing BMP (Best Management Practicing) version 4; speed 25 Knots; huge free board.
