storage.

Later weeks:
 Error detection & recovery.
 Partitioning.
 File systems. (allocation tables, free space, allocation models, free lists etc )
 Common proprietary file system standards.
 Forensic tools .
 Case studies.

Subject to alterations
Portfolio mark
 In class testing
 ACW (report + a portfolio piece)
 Self study
 Lab work

Help and other bits about ACW

“Data Storage And Security, a technological
impact on digital forensics”

ACW1 out now (clickly)

 It is not the same as last year
 Submission 26th of oct 2008 (in both fields)
 Only one =none submission
Discussion 1

Knowledge transfer

Discussion 2

Introduction of self study

In teams of between 4 and 6 discuss the
following:
 Types of media analogue and digital(10 minutes)
 Report results back as a class
 click
 Types of device what type of media they are (10
minutes)
 Report results back as a class
 click
System Reading and Writing of data comes in 3
flavours:
 Optical
 Solid state
 Magnetic

 Hybrid
Magneto-Optical Drives
What type are the following
 CD,DVD ,blue ray, Etc
 HDD (Hard Disc Drives)
 Floppy disc
 Zip/Jazz discs
 USB Storage
 Compact flash media cards

This is not the full range of media storage devices, it is purely for example
Devices
 Compact Disc
 Digital Versatile Disc
 Blue ray/High definition discs
Pros Cons
 Very cheap medium  Easy to damage
CDs/DVDs etc
 Limited storage
 Compatibility issues
magneto-optical drive
 write magnetically
 read optically
Pros Cons
 Large data storage  Not widely used
 Not standardised
 Expensive
Devices
 SSD
 USB flash drives
 SmartMedia
 CompactFlash
 I-ram Drive (acts like a SATA hard drive)
 Only SATA 1 at the moment

 ETC…..
Pros Cons
 No moving parts  Damage can occur if
 Cheap removed incorrectly
 Not affected by
 Movement
 Magnets
 Robust
Devices
 Hard Disk drives
 Floppy Disk drives
 3.5”
superdisk
 5”
 Zip
 Jaz
 Tape drives
Pros Cons
 Cheap  Data can be
 Ability to store large damaged/destroyed
amounts of data with storage magnets
In two teams discuss the following:
 The most suitable uses for
 Magnetic storage.
 MO drive storage.
 Solid state storage.
 Optical storage.
Decide which media would be best for the
following and why
1. Storing back up of coursework files for last year used for
reference.
2. Storing back up of current work for safety
3. Running programs
4. Copying 100gb of data for forensic investigation

Email your findings to me by this Friday

Also keep your result it will forum part of your portfolio
You will be presenting your findings next week
After 1pm today you will find some extra
