How I prepared for the CST

I prepared for the CST by reviewing what we learned all year in class. Also, I have been asking questions in class for things I dont understand. In addition, I learned a lot of great test taking strategies. Lastly, I have been going to the Academic Superstar Program on Saturdays from 8:30-11:50.

How SFMS teachers have prepared me for the CST

The teachers have given me test every week on the lesson we have done. They review the topics that we dont understand very well. The teachers help us learn everything we need to know. They give us tips to help us save time during the CST.

Test Taking Tips: The Night and Morning Before

You should have a good night sleep. Also, you should eat a good and nutritious breakfast. You should arrive to school on time.

Test Taking Tips: During the Test

Pace yourself, dont rush. Read the entire question and pay attention to the details. Do the easiest problems first. Dont spend so much time on the ones you are stuck on. Do the questions that have the greatest point value first. Dont worry if others finish before you. Take your time.

Math Tips

Read the whole question before doing any calculations. Eliminate answers that you know are wrong. Do the easy problems first. Take your time reading the word problems. Underline key words in the problem that are helpful.

English Tips

Read the questions before reading the story. Take your time reading the story. Highlight key terms in the story. Dont rush through the test. Eliminate all of the wrong answers.

Changing Percents, Decimals, and Fractions

A fraction whose denominator is 100 is called a percent. The word percent means hundredths (per hundred). To change decimals to percents you have to move the decimal point two spaces to the right. Insert a percent sign. To change percents to decimals you have to eliminate the percent sign. Then move the decimal two places to the left.

Powers and Exponents

An exponent is a positive or negative number or 0 placed above and to the right of a quantity. It expresses the power to which the quantity is to be raised or lower. Squares and cubes are two specific types of powers that should be noted. To square a number, just multiply it by itself the way youd find the area of a square. To cube a number, just multiply it by itself twice the way you find the volume of a cube.

Example

42 + 9 3 16 + 729 745 First you solve the exponents. After that, you add the numbers.

Similes

A simile is a figure of speech. It compares two things that are alike in a way. It uses the words like or as. A simile differs from a metaphor which doesnt use like or as. Similes usually compare humans with an object.
